We're cooking up some good stuff here in Nashville #in - 03/31/11 06:25 PM
Posted on March 31, 2011 by Barry Owen
Here in Nashville, TN our weather is still Blissfully COOL and the market is heating up
In September 2010, I opened a new firm named Pareto Realty and we've been creating ever since.
The one thing we believed from the beginning is that LOCAL BUSINESS MATTERS . . .
We believe that the REALTOR community has some great influence when it comes to supporting local businesses and communities.
SO . . .
I visioned an event in which REALTORS and Local business owners can gather to build relationships and tackle … (0 comments)

Innovative use of "downtime" #in - 03/30/11 12:06 PM
Posted on March 30, 2011 by Barry Owen
My mantra for several years has been: "Keep moving . . . FORWARD . . . ALWAYS" . . . with the unsaid underscore reminder that the "moving" is never about getting AWAY from someone or something . . . always moving forward, towards something new and important.
I believe the REAL secret to success is that "Always Moving" part.
Seth Godin played around with this idea a bit in today's blog post:
A Slow News Day
"I think you can learn a lot about an organization (and a person's career) when you … (0 comments)

Full Throttle! #in - 03/29/11 10:11 AM
Posted on March 29, 2011 by Barry Owen
When flying, odds are good that you want the pilot to be 100% committed and FULL THROTTLE down the runway . . . Just to be sure the plane gets off the ground.
You're also fully invested in that pilot staying focused and aware throughout the flight . . . and as committed as ever when it's time to land.
Thankfully, most pilots maintain this level of commitment day in and day out . . . flight after flight after flight . . . and there are stringent FAA regulations which require maximum … (0 comments)

Monday Morning Coffee - Nashville Combat Leadership Lesson #in - 03/28/11 10:53 AM
Posted on March 28, 2011 by Barry Owen
"Leadership is a potent combination of Strategy and Character. But if you must be without one, be without Strategy"
General H. Norman Schwarzkopf
There's somewhat of a war unfolding here in Nashville.
It all began when Mary Catherine Bradshaw veteran educator and diehard champion of the IB (Inter Baccalaureate) program at Hillsboro High school was "removed from the classroom" last week "to be re-assigned". No one seems to know (or care much about) where the reassignment will be.
The sudden removal started a firefight of epic proportions as word got out. In this world of … (0 comments)

Vilfredo Pareto and the 20/80 Principle #in - 03/26/11 08:04 PM
Posted on March 27, 2011 by Barry Owen
My first check of email this morning included a notification from Twitter that @italianre is now following me. Because the roots of Pareto Realty derive from early 1900′s Italy . . . and I have an interest in learning more about these roots . . . I followed them back and checked out their website http://www.italianrealestate.org/ Looks like a cool on-line place to find some less "mainstream" ways to see Italy.
That got me thinking. Just over 6 months ago, I opened Pareto Realty, LLC with a grand vision . . . That vision continues … (0 comments)

The 5th week of March . . . Adult Spring Break! #in - 03/26/11 07:29 PM
Posted on March 26, 2011 by Barry Owen
Oh how LUCKY we all are!
We all get an extra week this month.
Really! Take a look at the month. There are nearly 5 full weeks, and in my case (and likely yours), I have monthly recurring events that populate my calendar automatically . . . Sales Meetings, board Meetings, Educational events, etc . . .
NONE of them fall on the 5th week
So . . . As I look at a wonderfully uncluttered calendar for this week, I am thinking I'll just fill it with tidying up a few … (3 comments)

Big Hat . . . No Cattle! #in - 03/25/11 10:49 AM
Posted on March 25, 2011 by Barry Owen
Do you practice what you preach?
Walk your talk?
Do you overpromise and underdeliver . . . EVER?
OR
Do you underpromise and OVERdeliver?
Are your "Scripts and dialogs" in alignment with the service you provide?
When working with a customer or client, are you a hammer looking for a nail?
Do you understand the notion that when someone buys a drill, it's not the drill he buys . . . it's the holes the drill will make in the future?
Who are you "serving"?
Yourself?
Others?
These are only tough questions when there's crack … (0 comments)

Life Rhythm Recipe #in - 03/23/11 10:25 AM
Posted on March 23, 2011 by Barry Owen
This week, I facilitated my quarterly "Life Rhythm Workshop". This session is an introduction to a new (for many folks) way of living such that "Live, Work, & Play" are all able to co-exist in harmony.
After the class was over, my friend Sher had missed the session and asked me if she could read the book? Well . . . I write that book daily here . . . But she got me thinking that I really could probably capture the nuts and bolts of it in a single blog post . … (0 comments)

Monday Morning Coffee - A "No-Fly" Spring Break #in - 03/21/11 06:51 AM
Posted on March 21, 2011 by Barry Owen
No! We did not fly anywhere this Spring Break . . . We DROVE from Nashville to Virginia to Potomac Maryland . . . Fiddled around in Washington DC a few days . . . meandered up to Philadelphia and then Marathoned our way back to Nashville.
In all of those wanderings we spent some good quality time with cousins and Grandparents and good friends . . . oh! and our 2 Tennessee Senators Lamar Alexander and Bob Corker . . . and we enjoyed each other during those "away from the grind" 8 … (1 comments)

Building customer loyalty with "Rewards"? #in - 03/20/11 10:52 AM
Posted on March 20, 2011 by Barry Owen
The fastest path to losing me as a customer is to waste my time and money.
REALLY!
Office Depot just promised me (in an email promo) to receive my "rewards " faster by registering on-line . . . Against better judgement, I took the bait and hit the link.
That took me down an on-line bunny trail which led to 10 minutes of frustration as I waded through a maze of login/password complications ending with immediate disposal of my "working Rewards" plastic card.
The next email I saw came from Office Max and plainly stated … (1 comments)

Monday Morning Coffee - Forgotten more than you know? #in - 03/14/11 07:18 AM
Posted on March 14, 2011 by Barry Owen
Deb & I, driving down the road, had a conversation that only Jay Leno would really appreciate. It started with us passing a landmark that I knew to be a Civil War battle area having studied the tactics of the commanders in that war while I was in the military.
I mentioned the civil war . . . which led to a comment about the War of 1812 . . . which brought wonderment about when the revolutionary War happened as it related to the civil War . . . and WHY they all happened . … (0 comments)

If you could have the conference YOUR way . . . #in - 03/12/11 10:13 PM
Posted on March 13, 2011 by Barry Owen
Seth Godin wrote an interesting blog post today about conferences
In which he says about attending conferences: "I focus on what I do remember: the engaged conversations. The one on one discussions of what someone is working on. Helping a friend design a book cover or solve a thorny entrepreneurial problem. Sneaking out to go to a taco stand for lunch with a very cool CEO... These are the reasons it is worth going. (At least for me). So do more of that, I think."
So . . . Instead of attending the keynote … (1 comments)

What's LUCK got to do with it? #in - 03/10/11 09:22 AM
Posted on March 10, 2011 by Barry Owen
When talking about a High Performing person, it's easy to blame her success on LUCK!
The green monster of envy often shows up, and folks might snarl and say things like: "OH! She's just LUCKY . . . She has that Midas touch! Everything she touches turns into GOLD! . . . It's just NOT FAIR because she just flits around and gathers clients without appearing to have any plan whatsoever."
It's difficult for folks to understand why some succeed at very high levels seemingly effortlessly while others "work like dogs" with nominal results.
This isn't … (1 comments)

Time FLIES when you're having fun - Don't be a spectator #in - 03/08/11 02:59 PM
Posted on March 8, 2011 by Barry Owen
Just in case you haven't noticed . . . Time passes whether you're paying attention or not.
Time flies when you're having fun because you are ENGAGED and most probably more in alignment with your real PURPOSE while you are having fun (Otherwise, it wouldn't be fun).
It's all those other, less interesting, times when I suspect that you are really being not much more than a spectator . . . an observer . . . a bystander . . . on the sidelines where it's "safer" because you don't have to stick … (3 comments)

Monday Morning Coffee - Everyday Greatness #in - 03/07/11 09:46 AM
Posted on March 7, 2011 by Barry Owen
Good morning!
This month's book club book is Stephen Covey's Everyday Greatness - Inspiration for a Meaningful Life. Follow the link to the "Pareto Store" where you can grab a copy so you can read along with us
How could you not be curious about a book by THAT title?
I'm just getting through the Introduction thus far and am already glad this book jumped off the Library shelf into my hands because I've always enjoyed (and learned from) Stephen Covey's writings . . . and he begins with explaining THIS form of Greatness … (0 comments)

Innovating "Back to the Future" #in - 03/05/11 12:13 PM
Posted on March 5, 2011 by Barry Owen
100% of my coaching and business philosophy revolves around "ninja style" personal high touch business practices . . .
Without fail, this leads to performance at very high levels . . .
and ultimately attracts more clients.
The irony lies in the simple truth that this is really not much more than innovating "back to the future" . . .
It's as if the really smart folks are figuring out that some of the "old ways" were not so stupid after all.
Each time I meet with someone and explain the simplicity of the concept, … (2 comments)

How far will worry and anxiety get you? - 03/03/11 07:56 AM
Posted on March 3, 2011 by Barry Owen
I believe that worry and anxiety are the root causes of many health issues . . . High Blood Pressure, Heart failure, and even cancer. My wife believes that "resentment" is the leading cause of cancer.
So . . . WHY do we fret so much?
What issues do we solve by worrying?
Worry and anxiety often lead to us deciding to QUIT and crawl into a hole (resulting in NOTHING getting done) . . . OR we get angry and WORK WORK WORK thinking that if we work HARDER and/or LONGER, we … (7 comments)

You're selling your "House" - NOT your "Home" #in - 03/01/11 06:41 AM
Posted on March 1, 2011 by Barry Owen
Dear Home Seller,
Congratulations on your decision to move to another house. Now that we have spent time creating (discovering) your vision of your new house, it is now time to prepare your current house for the market.
First, we must differentiate "House" from "Home" . . . There's more than mere semantics at play here. Your "House" is that thing we're going to sell . . . Your "Home" is that place (wherever it may be) where your family gathers and plays and loves and sleeps . . . and roosts when the day is done.
