If you are looking for a "forest" to live in and you still want to be able to commute to work at Fort Belvoir, the Pentagon or any installation in the Military District of Washington then you might want to check out the "forests" in Springfield.Okay that might have been a bit cheesy but the developers who built the numerous neighborhoods with "Forest" in their name did leave plenty of trees. Over the years they have continued to grow and provide each neighborhood a leafy canopy and beautiful displays of colors in our changing seasons.

Are you looking for a way to spend the $8000 first time home buyer's incentive?  Then you might want to consider the all brick townhouses in the Charlestown neighborhood in West Springfield to use your piece of the incentive. You don't find many neighborhoods that have been as well maintained as this one.  With an HOA that does all of the outside maintenance including a three year paint schedule, roofing, sidewalks, brick courtyard walls and front landscaping it makes the homeowners jobs to a minimum.
While the neighborhood is primarily made up of three level townhouses there are a scattering of two … (2 comments)

springfield virginia: West Springfield Village & Kings Park-Sister Springfield Communities - 01/28/09 02:49 PM
If you are driving down Rolling Road between Lake Braddock Road and the Fairfax County Parkway you will pass two communities that look very similar.  There is a reason for this similarity.  Both communities were built by Richmarr homes starting in the late 1960's and feature the same style brick homes.Kings Park is the bigger of the two communities with 1100 homes to West Springfield Village's 423 homes but the models are the same, King, Queen, Prince, Duke and Duchess.  Besides having the same model homes available in both neighborhoods, Richmarr also left many of the large trees on the quarter … (0 comments)

springfield virginia: Greentree Village-Don't Let the Small Size Fool You - 01/27/09 10:34 AM
Greentree Village is what you might expect to see in a community in Fairfax County, Virginia.  Located in West Springfield, the neighborhood seems typical of many in the area.  With only 124 brick front townhouses backing to trees it is a one of the smaller townhouse neighborhoods in the area but it is well maintained by the HOA.  With no through streets and grassy islands in the courtyards to slow traffic down you don't have to worry about about young children going out to play.
Across the street from the neighborhood is one of the 380 parks maintained by the Fairfax County Park Authority.  A Fairfax County Connector … (4 comments)

springfield virginia: Data Trends-Are Only Two Years Enough? - 01/25/09 01:30 PM
Recently I've switched from comparing 2007 to 2008 sales numbers as an indicator of trends in Northern Virginia neighborhoods.  Instead I'm posting neighborhood data for the last five years.  Not all neighborhoods trend the same way at the same time.   However a pattern of when the average prices began to fall, the days on market and seller subsidies began to climb is more apparent with a five year chart than just looking at the last two years.  There is no doubt that I'm not a statistician and rely heavily on the MLS for most of my data.  However since the data is readily available, … (8 comments)

springfield virginia: Welcome to Daventry-The Ups and Downs of Five Years of Sales - 01/22/09 11:47 PM
In my previous post "Welcome to Daventry-Choose Your Style of Walking"  I talked about all of the terrific attributes of the Daventry neighborhood in West Springfield, including convenience to public transportation, community amenities and the popularity of the community for anyone who is looking for a neighborhood that offers everything from condos to detached homes. One of the questions that buyers and sellers ask on a regular basis "is how are the neighborhood trends?"  Anyone who reads the paper or listens to the evening news knows that the Northern Virginia real estate market has had some significant changes over the last five … (2 comments)

springfield virginia: Welcome to Daventry-Choose Your Favorite Style of Walking - 01/21/09 10:02 PM
For Springfield (VA) commuters the Daventry neighborhood provides the option to walk to the main entrance to the community and grab slug to the Pentagon.   If you aren't familiar with the term "slug" in relation to Northern Virginia commuting don't panic.  It is a unique and legal way to hitch-hike your way to the Pentagon, State Department, World Bank or many other locations in DC.  The Daventry line is geared for a direct route to the Pentagon.A free ride isn't the only reason that Daventry is a popular neighborhood in Springfield.  The community offers a community pool, community center, tennis … (3 comments)

Chances are you will see a wild bunny or two in your yard in the Saratoga neighborhood in Springfield Virginia.   With the pockets of woods scattered throughout the neighborhood you will also see deer and foxes too.  The wildlife, nice size lots, the quick hop to Fort Belvoir, nearby shopping, recreation and ease of commuting make Saratoga a neighborhood that stays on the list of popular Springfield neighborhoods.

springfield virginia: Military Relocation-Moving with Your Pets To Northern Virginia - 01/20/09 10:02 AM
If your family includes a pet or two, making sure that they are safe and secure during your move can often be just as important as making sure your household goods arrive in one piece. Our family has moved around the world with pets and I know how difficult it can be find good care for your pet in a new surrounding. The first thing to remember if you are moving with a pet is to make sure as you set aside your personal information that you also include a copy of your pets health history and medications that they may … (8 comments)

springfield virginia: Reflections on Northern Virginia-Traveling on Shirley Highway - 01/18/09 02:02 AM
It is obvious when you look at the large overhead signs, I-95 is the interstate running outside the beltway and I-395 runs inside the beltway to DC.  However if someone asks you how to get to DC and you say take Shirley Highway then you know you are a "native" of Northern Virginia.  Officially Shirley Highway runs from the Pentagon to just north of Route 1 in Woodbridge.  The start of the construction of the highway started in 1941 and lasted until 1952 when the four lane road was completed.  Originally known as the Fort Belvoir bypass the road was renamed for … (8 comments)

springfield virginia: Springfield Virginia-Homer Simpson is No Where in Sight! - 01/04/09 09:56 AM
Long before Homer Simpson made the TV town of Springfield famous, before the Springfield Mixing Bowl was created or Slug lines came to town their was a small ‘country” highway stop fifteen miles outside of DC that would come to be known as Springfield Virginia.
In 1946 the developer Edwin Carr realized that their was a huge piece of undeveloped land, close enough to DC to be appealing to government workers who worked in town and that would provide space for larger homes than were currently available in Arlington or Alexandria. My parents were one of those families who decided that … (6 comments)

springfield virginia: Watch out for Two Buck Chuck - 06/30/07 02:47 AM

Ripples of anguish are running through the California wine industry.  For those of you who are fortunate enough to have a Trader Joe's in your area you already know about the Charles Shaw wine sold in the stores as "Two Buck Chuck".  I've often wondered when I was in the store why I would see customers buying cases of the wine and figured as a snob of New Zealand and Australian wines that they just had no taste.
Turns out that the Charles Shaw 2005 California Chardonnay has been named the best Chardonnay from California at the California State … (10 comments)
