christmas: Christmas at Fort Defiance, Clarksville TN - 2018 - 11/28/18 04:54 PM
It's Happening Again Christmas in Occupied Clarksville TN
Fort Defiance will be having a celebration depicting a Christmas during the occupied years of the 1860's. These were hard times during the Civil War back when Christmases were simple. A special meal or dessert was shared, a small gift perhaps or sharing a piece of candy made this time of year special. This is something to see and reflect on. Christmas in Occupied Clarksville is a special event.
The day is Sunday, December 16th from 3-4 and again from 5-6 PM. Step back in time with period costumes, reenactments, Santa, games and refreshments. Santa will be there to read to children. Fort … (8 comments)

christmas: Throwback Thursdays- Memories of Christmases Past - 12/27/17 09:21 PM
Christmas Memories of my Childhood
There are so many vivid memories and moments of Christmas and Christmas traditions that have shaped and formed how I wanted to instil the traditions of Christmas in my children. My mom made each holiday special and though there were many of us living on a very limited income, she did certain things that were special, very special.
There were many little things that made Christmas special. Christmas, of course, was centered around Jesus birth. Mom worked for the church and we went to services, plays and learned the Christmas story. The rest she added to teach us about giving and gracefully receiving.

christmas: Will a Buyer Call on Christmas Day? - 12/24/17 10:39 AM
Do You Keep Your Phone on During Christmas Festivities?

It was several years ago when we put our home on the market the week before Christmas. We fully expected to have no action until after the holidays were done but wanted to get a jump on having it market ready and looking good with all the holiday decor.

About midday on Christmas Day the phone rang. The caller apologized for calling and disturbing our Christmas but had seen the sign while visiting some friends of theirs in the neighborhood. The caller wasn't expecting to see it that day but wanted to set an appointment for as soon as … (8 comments)

christmas: The Smell of Cinnamon - 12/23/17 08:16 PM
Cinnamon Rolls on the Production Line
The last few days I have made dozens of cinnamon rolls with a light orange glaze to take and share with others. The first batch went to my Board of Directors that have worked with me and supported me this last year as I served as President for my local Association.
I also made sure all the staff members got some. i didn't leave out and the staff at my office and took them rolls or banana bread. The smell drove my husband crazy and he didn't get any until the second round of rolls were baked. There were … (14 comments)

christmas: The Eve Before the Night Before - 12/23/17 08:09 PM
The Eve Before
This has been a busy day getting ready for the family to come tomorrow to celebrate Christmas. There were a few errands to run and tidying up the house. Our tradition is to play Christmas music while we prepare so it makes the day more fun while we sing along.
In between running errands and getting a haircut, I made a couple of desserts and prepared a few dishes for the big dinner tomorrow. We have ham and the trimmings on Christmas and turkey on Thanksgiving. My kids are all prospering adults and will bring dishes to contribute to the meal.

Christmas in Downtown Clarksville

Clarksville has a Historic Downtown that is pretty to see any time of the year. But when Christmastime rolls around, you don't want to miss seeing it in the evening hours. It is all lit up with lights and decorated lampposts and lighted buildings and streetways.
I promise you it is worth the drive to take a look and see the magic going on. On Public Square you'll see the lighted tree in front of City Hall and City Hall has trees in all of their arched windows. Franklin St. and Strawberry Alley are in lights and you will feel in the … (10 comments)

Here Are a Few of My Favorite Things
It's Christmastime and the parties and the hustle and bustle are going strong. It is hard to focus on the real meaning of Christmas with all the distractions. We must slow down and consider what is most important to us and not let this season pass us by.
The simplest things can give us the most pleasure. They are the things that we remember and that we want to share. Here are some of my favorite things this holiday season.

MeMaw is the best cook!
The smell of balsam. I just bought a balsam-scented candle to enjoy this season.

Christmas in Occupied Clarksville TN- 2017
A favorite is returning again this year at Fort. Defiance. A historic Christmas Celebration is taking place on Sunday, December 10th from 3-6pm. This is an opportunity to see the way Christmas was celebrated during the Civil War with Clarksville was occupied by the Union Army.  Fort Defiance Civil War and Interpretive Center is a treasure of an experience in learning and this fun event brings people back each year.

There will be refreshments of eggnog and cakes, Christmas carols, period Christmas costumes and decorated trees and even a Santa from the Civil War Period. This is a family-friendly event and all ages … (13 comments)

christmas: Where to Find Live Christmas Trees in Clarksville, TN- 2017 - 12/04/17 07:57 PM
Live Christmas Trees in Clarksville, TN

Clarksville, TN has many options when it comes to finding a fresh Christmas tree. Almost every corner in town has a tree lot and most of the big box stores and grocery stores are also selling trees.
Don't forget that another good source is the local nurseries and landscape businesses. I like nothing better than the smell of balsam or pine and the natural look a real tree. Prices seem to be up this year over past years but that will not stop those that want to keep a real tradition in place.
Here are the names of … (7 comments)

Throwback Thursdays- Christmas in New York

This is a throwback from Christmas 2006. My daughter was expecting her first baby and she wanted to take a mother and daughter trip to New York to see the Christmas lights and splendor.

We had a fabulous time and walked our legs off seeing Time Square at night, Broadway plays and shopping at the famous stores on Fifth Avenue.

Near our hotel was Macy's Department Store. Their gorgeous window displays and decorated interiors are truly beautiful. All the hustling and bustling sure puts you in the Christmas spirit especially if you put it with great food, good drink … (30 comments)

christmas: Serendipity Sundays- Christmas Lights - 12/18/16 07:56 PM
Serendipity Sundays- Christmas Lights
One of my favorite experiences of the holiday season is seeing the Christmas lights. Some people go to great lengths to decorate and many cities provide elaborate displays.
This weekend I got to see the lighting display in a neighboring city. Their tradition is to light the city park and provide a one mile drive-through showcase of holiday scenes. To add to the fun, you tune in your radio to a designated channel and listen as you slowly drive through the lighted park.
It took about 20 minutes to travel the park and nobody seemed to be in any rush.

christmas: Some of the Best Christmas Gifts Are Giving Time - 12/17/16 08:47 AM
Some of the Best Christmas Gifts are Spending Time Together
As time passes we get more and more stuff. It gets very difficult to find the right gift and many of us result to giving gift cards and money. It becomes stressful to think about and tends to lose the joy of finding the right gift.

Thinking outside the box, I am focusing on giving experiences and the gift of time. Planning an event or day out together is special to me and also to the recipient.  Fun adventures like attending a play, museum, art show or a botanical garden are out of the … (25 comments)

Throwback Thursdays- Christmas, Grandkids Style

This was taken at Christmas 2007. These are my 3 oldest grandsons and they are cousins. Even back when they were toddlers and babies they have loved each other so much.

These little guys play rough. They do a lot of hugging, wrestling and boy stuff. One of them generally gets hurt when they play together. We never worry about it too much because of the love they have for one another. They always say I'm sorry and make up.

Kids make Christmas special and their excitement is contagious. When kids are around there is laughter and something happening … (35 comments)
