chester county historic homes: September 2019 E-Newsletter - 08/27/19 12:05 PM
DELAWARE NEWS
The biggest news I have for Delaware historic home lovers is that Stonum, the country home of George Read, Signer of the Declaration of Independence, is now on the market. We already have had some public attention from the local newspaper, and two TV stations. We have also been fortunate to have visits from both the staff of the George Read II house museum and the New Castle Historical Society, as well as the University of Delaware CHAD. Everyone has contributed their observations about how some of the features in the home may have been changed or moved and have … (2 comments)

chester county historic homes: Chester County Farm Visit Travels Through Time - 08/11/18 08:02 AM
Agricultural Antiques & Modern Machines were the subject of the Town Tours and Villaage Walks last week in Cochranville, Pennsylvania. This was quite a switch from my usual forays into the countryside to look at historic buildings.

The men and women of the Upper Oxford and Londonderry Historical Commissions gathered antique farm equipment from friends and neighbors, as well as modern air-conditioned monster machines.

We went from the wooden plows pulled by horses or mules to John Deere tractors, to monster equipment costing several hundred thousand dollars.  I can't pretend to be able to explain this machinery but one particularly large piece … (1 comments)

chester county historic homes: S. Chester County Market Figures are Positive - 07/25/18 12:36 PM
Yesterday, we reviewed the numbers in New Castle County, Delaware. Now let's cross the state line and go up into Southern Chester County, Pennsylvania. Market conditions always vary in this more rural area which places a high value on open space. As a matter of fact, Kennett Twp. recently purchased land for open space. And the purchase was indeed substantial: 63.8 acres of woodlands between Burnt Mill and Old Kennett roads, to be preserved forever as open space through a conservation easement to be held by the Land Conservancy for Southern Chester County (TLC).

So, does this have an effect on real … (0 comments)

chester county historic homes: My Hayride to Iron Magnate's Castle (no, not magnet) - 06/29/18 12:15 PM
Not quite sure what to expect when I signed up for a hayride (other than coming home with hay in my shoes and car) on one of Chester County's Town Tours and Village Walks in Nantmeal Twp., PA last night.
As I learned on the hayride, the Potts family were key to this area (i.e. nearby Pottstown). The Potts' built Isabella Furnace,  a cold blast charcoal iron furnace named for Isabella Potts, wife of one of the partners.  Isabella was the last iron furnace to be built in the county, in 1835, and was operated by members of the Potts family and … (3 comments)

chester county historic homes: 10 Things to Know Before You Sell an Historic Home - 11/01/17 07:09 PM
The world and the world of Real Estate have changed since I got into selling historic homes almost 30 years ago, so what follows is a review of points to remember before you list or sell an historic home in today's market.
1. Don't worry if it does not have a glitzy interior but retains original features such as marble mantles.
2. Don't worry if it's not "open plan" but worry if so many interior walls have been removed that the house has lost its original character.
3. Worry if you have removed all the original millwork.
4. Worry if you have made the fireplaces … (7 comments)
