volunteers: Paying It Forward to the Volunteers Who Lost Everything! - 07/28/11 08:41 AM

Last night I received a call from Donna DeHart, Director of Development for Habitat for Humanity of West Virginia.  She was waiting  for a van bringing 15 teenagers from Pendleton County to White Sulphur Springs to volunteer for the Greenbrier Classic for the rest of the week.   On the way, the van caught on fire.  Thankfully, no one was hurt!   But, the van was destroyed and they lost everything in the fire.  Their clothes, cameras, phones, sleeping bags, and other personal items all burned with the van.
Another van was sent from Virginia to get … (12 comments)

Pay It Forward and Support Your Local
Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) for Children

I support CASA of the Eleventh Judicial Circuit, West Virginia.  Since this program became fully operational in 2004, 25 CASA volunteers have advocated for 167 local abused and neglected children.  There have been 105 children placed in permanent and stable homes. This could not have been possible without the support CASA receives.

When foster children are bounced around, they can end up feeling homeless. Having their lives repeatedly uprooted leaves these children feeling alone and unwanted. YOU can ensure they'll … (3 comments)

volunteers: Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) for Children - 03/31/09 02:53 PM
When I first moved to Lewisburg, WV, my neighbor, Maribeth Irwin, asked if I could "Be a Friend of CASA" and be on the fund raising committee.  Of course, I said yes, and have been helping to raise money since moving here in 2006.  We support and promote court-appointed volunteer advocacy for abused and neglected children so that they can thrive in safe, permanent homes.
In 1977, a Seattle judge conceived the idea of using trained community volunteers to speak for the best interests of abused and neglected children in court. So successful was this program that soon judges across the … (0 comments)
