thanksgiving: Ah! Thanks for Thanksgiving! - 11/21/12 02:18 PM
As I was out running Thanksgiving errands today, I had my car radio tuned to our local NPR station, and on the Diane Rehm Show, a group of people were talking about Black Friday, and to my horror, I heard that many of the country's big box stores were planning to be open on Thanksgiving so people could get an early start.
What?
Isn't Thanksgiving a day to spend with the people we love and to eat a lot of turkey and count our many blessings?
And even more interesting than the guests were the callers.  Some were appalled by the … (12 comments)

thanksgiving: Being Thankful - 11/23/11 02:22 PM
Tomorrow, I'll be getting up early to prepare Thanksgiving dinner.
First, I'll make the stuffing.  It's an old family recipe with Pepperidge Farm seasoned bread crumbs (OK, my great-grandmother probably seasoned her own bread crumbs), chopped celery and onions, sliced mushrooms, walnuts, apple chunks, some mushroom broth (original recipe was chicken broth), Craisins (great grandmother used raisins) and then I have to separate the part for my vegetarian sister while I put Jimmy Dean sage sausage (sage sausage is the magic ingredient) in the carnivore version.
Then there will be the potatoes.  I like to do twice baked, taking them out … (15 comments)

thanksgiving: The Aunt Bobbie China - 11/26/09 04:39 PM
My great aunt Bobbie (my mother's aunt) was quite a character.
When I was growing up, she would come to visit us a couple of times each year.  And during every visit, she would give me a Tonette, an old Toni home permanent for little girls.  And for the next six months, I would look like I stuck my little finger into a light socket.  And by the time the frizz finally started to relax, she'd show up again.  And BZZZZZZ!  More frizz.
She bought me my first flute and took me to my first concert at Carnegie Hall.
Once when … (18 comments)

thanksgiving: I Could Have Gone To Safeway, But No-oh! - 11/24/09 01:33 PM
Every Tuesday before Thanksgiving, after the office meeting and brokers' tour, I head out Colesville Road to Fulton Maryland to Maple Lawn Farm to get my turkey.
The birds lucky enough to grow up at Maple Lawn lead pretty good lives.  Their avian condo units are quite spacious.  They get to scratch around the ground looking for worms. and the food (other than the worms) is pretty good, too.
But not that wonderful.  These guys appear to be the sole survivors of a recent massacre.
And I walked out with a 20 pound bird who, until just hours before, was alive … (26 comments)

thanksgiving: It's Thanksgiving! Have You Phoned Your Realtor Yet Today? - 11/27/08 12:21 PM
DON'T DO IT!
Step away from the phone!
It can wait until tomorrow!
There is almost no such thing as a real estate emergency, and it's taken me many years to figure ths out - and to figure out how to communicate it to my clients.
Like most people, I spent today with my family giving thanks for the many blessings the year sent our way.  And except for calls from absent siblings and a neighbor, by Blackberry was blissfully silent!
It rang lots yesterday, for which I gave thanks.
It will also ring lots tomorrow, for which I will … (18 comments)

thanksgiving: This Year - Something To Be Thankful For! - 11/26/08 05:43 AM
This is a thanks to my mother!
Tomorrow, we are gathering at her house, not mine, for Thanksgiving.  All I have to do is show up with my fabulous homemade cranberry sauce and a large quantitiy of wine.
So for the first time in years, I'm spending the Wednesday before Thanksgiving doing things other than obsessing over doing the Martha Stewart thing, which seems to take more energy than I'm used to expending!
Today, I showed a couple of houses, blogged a bit, and at 3:00pm I'm leaving for a pedicure.
Then, tomorrow at about eleven, I'll head for Baltimore.  It … (21 comments)

thanksgiving: A Realtor Giving Thanks - 11/22/07 02:04 PM
My family just left, and Ms. Super Organic Heritage Turkey is a carcass that is going to turn into some fabulous turkey soup.  I have been totally blessed with an amazing family and friends who constantly give me reasons to give thanks.  And when I’m sitting looking at the remains of today’s feast, I’m thinking about some other things that all Realtors can give thanks for.  So let’s look at a few of them.
Supra:  when I was a new agent, they didn’t have lock boxes.  When we prepared to show a bunch of houses to a buyer, we had to … (15 comments)
