spokane: Spokane's South Hill changes again - 01/14/16 03:20 AM
Spokane's South Hill changes again

The cleared property at 55th and Regal is primed for change and KXLY  recently announced a "new development".

For decades Regal Lumber sat on the upper regions of Spokane's South Hill quietly serving families, contractors and handymen. Since the store front, various sheds, warehouse,  piles of lumber  and parking lot are now history, the corner has been not much more than an eyesore.  Now the entire length of Regal from 29th to 63rd is not so quiet with the addition of Target and many other business.

Fortunately, Regal street south of 29th Avenue has seen numerous … (0 comments)

City:  Spokane   Venue:  Chateau Rive   Event: Concerts

Everyone I talk to these days comments on how many more things there are to do in Spokane...... more than ever before, and the best part is the broad variety of events and entertainment.  Something for everyone.
Music events are particularly popular and draw crowds to assorted venues all over Spokane year round. A classy new place is Chateau Rive.

Chateau Rive, located in the old Flour Mill, is in downtown Spokane on the North side of the Spokane River.  The old mill re-done has a good vibe. It is worth noting it has both city and national historical designation.  Visitors to the building enjoy that … (1 comments)

spokane: Hooray for Spokane's Tree Lined Neighborhoods - 08/05/15 09:03 AM
Hooray for Spokane's Tree Lined Neighborhoods!

"Leafy, tree-lined streets aren't just good for property values; they may also be good for your health..." according to a news article written by Deborah Netburn, Los Angeles Times - Science Now and re-printed in The Spokesman-Review. Citing a study in the Scientific Reports she explains the various ways that tree-lined neighborhoods contribute to health and well-being.

Growing up in the Pacific Northwest, I love trees and I enjoy reading articles such as these. Plus, I like good news from reputable sources.   From a purely business standpoint, mature trees increasing a home's value is great … (0 comments)

spokane: Do Nutrient Dense Foods interest Spokane residents? - 07/15/13 09:12 AM
If Nutrient Dense Foods interest Spokane residents and visitors then you need to know about Strawberry Hill Nutrition Farm.  I know you have heard of Green Bluff but have you heard of Strawberry Hill Nutrition Farm?  Or better yet, have you stopped by? Martha Stewart would say "it's a good thing".
We drove to Green Bluff Saturday afternoon to take advantage of the beautiful weather and scenery.  Green Bluff is a great place for the whole family.  You know some kids don't even know where food comes from.  Shopping for fresh fruits and vegetables at the farm is a great place … (0 comments)

spokane: Street Music Week Spokane Washington - 06/13/13 08:39 AM
Street Music Week Spokane Washington.                                            Another fun "happening" in Spokane this week.  In betweeen Bloomsday and Hoopfest comes Street Music Week.  Just what is Street Music Week?  Entertainers and musicians in the area are invited to participate and entertain in the Spokane downtown core during the second week in June.  And this year the Garland District was added.     The purpose, aside from entertainment, is to raise money. The generous donations from participants and  viewers go to support 2nd Harvest food bank.  Last year Spokane Street Music raised a whopping $12,000 from the generous folks who came by to listen … (0 comments)

spokane: Bloomsday this weekend in Spokane WA - 05/01/13 04:49 AM
 Bloomsday in Spokane.
According to the Spokesman-Review today over 48,000 entries have been received for this weekend’s 37th  Bloomsday.  The forecast is for mild weather and partly sunny skies.  Perfect!
I am happy to announce this will be my 37th Bloomsday.  Who would have ever thought that this tradition of participating in Spokane’s biggest road race would evolve into the honor of “PERENNIAL”.   There are 104 perennials.   My wife, Tana, offers her encouragement and support by making sure my calendar is marked and also joining the throng.  Her collection of the coveted T-shirts is pretty impressive, but mine is … (3 comments)

spokane: Spokane's Honors Dr King with a Martin Luther King, Jr. Way - 01/20/13 11:59 AM

I am happy to write a follow-up to my blog of January 2011, titled Where is Spokane’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Way? I felt it was taking far too long.  Well folks, Spokane finally has a Martin Luther King Way. The tribute to Dr. King has been completed and I am proud that our city is honoring a man who has done so much for so many. Opening ceremonies were held in late May.
It is a beautifully engineered thoroughfare which winds through Spokane’s growing University District.  Todays’ pictures are in stark contrast to the color and beauty enjoyed by … (1 comments)

spokane: Purchase a Home in Spokane with a reverse mortgage? - 11/20/12 07:18 AM
Purchasing a home in Spokane with a reverse mortgage is very similar to purchasing a home with a conventional mortgage.  The down payment must be from qualified sources and is based on certain factors, such as
 ·        Purchase price
·        Home’s appraised value
·        Interest rates
·        Borrower’s age
The current national home value is capped by FHA at $625,500 and in Spokane that typically isn’t a problem.  Our median home price hovers around $120,000.   Empty nesters who wish to downsize without incurring monthly mortgage payments may think the program is too good to be true. So now it is … (0 comments)

spokane: From Animal House to Our House: A Love Story - 07/05/12 02:53 PM

From Animal House to Our House: A Love Story by Ron Tanner.

Auntie’s Bookstore, my favorite Spokane indie bookstore, has Ron Tanner, author and homeowner scheduled to present Saturday, July 14th.
Ron is a preservationist and DIY hero who speaks from his heart about the agony and the ecstasy of buying and renovating an abandoned 4500 square foot frat house in Baltimore and restoring it to Victorian splendor. That must have been some kind of home loan he secured for the project.

The title of his book:  From Animal House to Our House: A Love Story.     View book's … (4 comments)

Scammers, Charlatons and Public Nuisances in Spokane, Washington
My office has received three phone calls  from women who were solicited for "personal" loans.....IF THEY SENT $100 TO INDIA......    Someone was using my company name and phone number.
I was happy to tell these callers they should run not walk away from any offer which requires money to be wired in advance of any service, any time, any where.   I also told them that we only do residential lending for refinancing and home purchasing and have never offered "personal" loans of any type.
I called the phone number and questioned a man (with a foreign accent) who … (0 comments)

Spokane's 34th Annual Home & Yard Show starts today ....started yesterday!!!!

Tana and I just returned from Spokane's Annual Home & Yard Show.  Even if the groundhog did see his shadow, our thoughts are of spring.
We visited with our friend, Barbara, Barbara Safranek Landscape Design, whose booth is worth seeing.   Why not stop by  and discuss your landscaping needs..she's familiar with the climate and the soil.  She has great ideas and is a true professional.
If you enjoy home improvement shows, I encourage you to head on out to the fairgrounds. There is plenty to see and do.  … (2 comments)

spokane: Do you call yours co-workers, cohorts, or could they be "Co-hearts"? - 02/13/12 10:51 AM
Do you call yours co-workers, cohorts or could they be "Co-hearts!

On the airplane returning from Boise to Spokane last night, I picked up the in-flight magazine, Spirit,  and on page ten  I met Eric Greer a “change and learning facilitator” out of Houston.  He is Southwest’s Star of the Month.

A couple of things caught my attention.  He calls his co-workers “co-hearts”….now isn’t that a fun concept especially on the eve of Valentine’s Day?  And the other, his favorite quote that sums up his philosophy:

“The past is behind; learn from it.
The future is ahead; prepare … (1 comments)

A Toast to Spokane!  How to deliver a really good holiday toast!
As a former lawyer, I rarely find myself lacking for words.  However, the opportunities for expounding on a topic before a captive audience are now diminished and seldom used since I became a loan originator some 20 years ago.  Nonetheless, opportunities both big and small (mostly small) pop up now and then.
It doesn't hurt to have a refresher course in toasting, since you never know when you may be asked to "say a few words".
