OZARKS DEER HUNTING OUTLOOK GOOD - 10/31/07 04:00 PM
DEER HUNTING OUTLOOK BRIGHT FOR SHELL KNOB

Deer hunters in Shell Knob, Missouri and other parts of the  Ozarks should do well this year.  The outlook is bright due largely to one weather event.
There was a severe freeze in late April, which destroyed virtually all the oak tree flowers.  Acorns from trees in the red oak group are bitter because they contain more tannin.  They mature the year after flowers are set.Acorns from trees in the white oak group are less bitter and therefore are the preferred food of white-tailed deer.  They mature the same year flowers are set.
There are almost no … (0 comments)

NEW TOOL PROVIDES SELLER INFORMATION - 10/30/07 03:58 PM
A SHELL KNOB REAL ESTATE REPORT FOR SELLERS
Four months go by without their Shell Knob agent bringing them an offer, so what's a seller to think?  Sure - there have been a couple of showings, but their agent has never shown it.  So what's a seller to think?  They haven't heard from their agent in weeks, so what's a seller to think?
I found a great tool hidden inside my MLS program today.  It showed me not only how many other agents had looked at my listings, but I had their name ,company and the dates they viewed the listing.
 I was … (5 comments)

FREEZE DAMAGE CONTINUES IN SHELL KNOB, MISSOURI - 10/27/07 03:14 PM
TREES VS NATURE
Landscaping is an important factor in enhancing  the appeal of Shell Knob homes, but what can you do when nature steps in with Hurricanes, Ice Storms or the recent Wildfires and destroys your prized vegetation?
Ozark Mountain territory has been exempt from coastal storms and drought, which can lead to savage fires, but we were host to a severe freeze and also an ice storm earlier this year.  The effects of these events will be long lasting.
Shell Knob did not suffer from the ice storm Springfield did, but we were hit with the late freeze.  I noticed a maple tree … (5 comments)

DEER RIFLE SIGHT IN DAYS - 10/26/07 03:02 PM

Had to stop the car outside Shell Knob yesterday and let a group of 5 deer cross the road,  so  deer hunting season must be almost upon us.  There was another young buck today that just wasn't certain if he should go left or right off the road.
To assist hunters in capturing  that trophy buck,  the Missouri Department of Conservation is offering Deer Rifle Sight  In Days again from October 29 through November 9.  The range will be open longer during the two weeks before the rifle deer season starts on November 10.
The Andy Dalton Shooting Range and Outdoor … (3 comments)

CAN YOU PERC IN SHELL KNOB? - 10/24/07 03:50 PM
GOING GREEN WITH SEPTIC SYSTEMS
As a Shell Knob Realtor I love selling lake front or lake view land.  Buyers are always excited about the prospect of building their dream cottage or lodge - that is  - until  we get to the regulations requiring a registered soil scientist to run a soil morphology report.  This is commonly known as a perc test.Sale of land lives or dies from this test result.
I used to not be concerned about the test, but this IS the Ozarks and these hills are made of rock - picturesque? yes, but some actual dirt would be nice … (1 comments)

TABLE ROCK - SHELL KNOB CHOSEN TO AID FISH - 10/22/07 04:29 PM
PILOT PROJECT TO HELP FISH HABITAT
I live on a dead end peninsula in Shell Knob, on Table Rock Lake.  Last week we noticed several dump trucks, loaded with tree limbs heading down our road the wrong way - going to the end of the road!  Out here in the boonies, we cart off our trash to a land fill - not bring it in!
Then I learned of this great new project to aid fish habitat.  These tree limbs were going to be sunk to create fish beds!  The little fish - shad- need someplace to run and hide so they … (0 comments)

VACATION HOME AND SHELL KNOB STATISTICS - 10/22/07 03:12 PM
SHELL KNOB AREA LAKE HOME SALES
Every evening news broadcast has something to say about the HOUSING MARKET DISASTER!  So it's logical then that we agents get questioned frequently by friends, neighbors and other business associates asking: How are sales in Shell Knob and around Table Rock Lake?
What do you say if your phone hasn't rung in a week and you've not shown any property for two weeks?  Then comes  a flurry of calls, showings and contracts.  Feast or famine.
Being in one of the smaller vacation and second home markets, our numbers seem infinitesimal compared to Colorado or Florida, but statistically, … (1 comments)

WALNUT TIME IN SHELL KNOB - 10/12/07 04:48 PM
 BLACK WALNUTS ARE TOUGH

I was thrilled when I discovered three large walnut trees on the property we bought in Shell Knob, Missouri.  A walnut tree was highly valued in Indiana, our previous home.
Being a 'City Girl' before coming here, I was not  familiar with harvesting the black walnut.  I gleefully picked up these green balls that fell from our trees, mentally adding up the pounds of nuts I could squirrel away (sorry couldn't resist) for holiday baking.
So I had all these paper grocery bags filled with the walnut balls- what now?  Tried to get the outer green casing off.  It … (2 comments)

Have You Tried Gigging? - 10/11/07 11:29 PM
GIGGING TOURNAMENT SET

A Gigging Tournament will be held this Friday, October 12 in Galena, Missouri.  Sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with the Fall Festival in Galena, the Stone County seat. There is a $15.00 tournament fee per boat for this nighttime event.
"What in the world is Gigging,"  is exactly what I asked my ex-Kansas farm-boy husband??  Seems it is an ancient way of catching large nocturnal feeding fish, with a spear of sorts.  It is an implement with a shaft and a barbed point, often with 3 prongs.
You evidentially jab (spear?) the fish … (24 comments)

New Corps Regulations for Marinas On Table Rock Lake - 10/09/07 02:43 PM
 Corps Establishes Marina Flotation Policy
The Army Corps of Engineers announced that it has established a policy regarding flotation material for marina and resort boat docks on its waters. Little Rock District lakes with commercial marinas or resort docks that fall under the policy include area lakes Table Rock, Beaver, and Bull Shoals. The district will require a gradual transition to encapsulated material to promote “more environmentally friendly, aesthetically appealing, and safe” facilities for the public. This new standard makes the requirements for commercial docks the same as it has been for private docks for the past 14 years. Under the new policy, … (0 comments)

HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH MORPHING WATER FRONT? - 10/08/07 02:17 PM
Morphing Waterfront Not an Ocean Tide
You might have a water front where the water rises and/or receds if you live on a lake that was created by a dam, such as Table Rock Lake in Shell Knob, Missouri. It is a novel experience for many new residents.  This is not created by a tide.  It relates to water use.
Most lakes of this type have been created to make electricity.  The dams can be private and owned by a power supplier,  but the majority of the large dams are under the supervision of the Army Corps of Engineers and government … (0 comments)

9 THINGS TO KNOW TO BUY A LOT IN SHELL KNOB - 10/05/07 03:47 PM
As a REALTOR in Shell Knob, Missouri, part of my job is to educate you on how to get the best lake property  for you and your family.

Most people who inquire about buying on Table Rock Lake, are unfamiliar with what makes a particular piece of land a good or bad location.  It is often a big surprise that you cannot have a boat dock in front of your home.  Other lakes you've been to allow docks, why not on Table Rock?
You might be seeking a fabulous view - maybe a Bluff lot would be good for you.  Perhaps being able … (4 comments)

Do You Fish? - 10/04/07 03:11 PM
Shell Knob, MO Fishing Report
Table Rock Lake's water temperature is slowly cooling. Daytime temps still in the high 80's,  and staying above 60 at night leaves the water temp in the high 70's.  Water level is 911'.
Bass fishing is picking up just in time for Shell Knob's  Homer Sloan Buddy Bass Tournament to be held this Saturday, October 6.
Fish will be found in several different locations, therefore different types of lures will be needed.  Tom Koob, Shell Knob resident fishing expert, reports having had bass last week on topwaters, crankbaits and soft plastic jerkbaits.
There were fish in the backs of coves, … (2 comments)

Do You Save Money By Switching? - 10/03/07 02:39 PM
Is It Worth Switching  Light Bulbs?I  have to confess, I don't have a single 13-Watt Mini-Twist CLF Light Bulb in my Shell Knob, Missouri  home.
I admit to being a little behind in getting into this 'green' thing.  I am seriously thinking about it and meant to put them on my shopping list last week, but my question is: Do they really impact your electric bill so you see a big difference?
Would someone who has made the change-over tell me that they noticed a change in what they were paying for their electricity?
Perhaps this is the wrong season to ask … (2 comments)
