colorado: Another Colorado Wildfire 9-12-10 - 09/12/10 11:21 AM
Another Colorado Wildfire 9-12-10
As I left church this morning I was shocked to see another huge plume of smoke billowing North of Boulder. I drove north up 75th street and then west on Hygiene Road. I took a few photos along the way. I noticed the helicopters and tankers were already moving in.
It’s is almost unbelievable to have another fire like this right on the heels of the other one. The good news is there is a large number of firefighters and resources in the general area from the Boulder Fire.
I don’t know much about this fire … (5 comments)

colorado: Boulder Colorado Saturday Sunshine - 09/11/10 11:55 AM
Boulder Colorado Saturday Sunshine
It is a beautiful sun shiny day here in Boulder Colorado. When I stepped outside early this morning I could not see or smell any smoke from the forest fire. It is the first time since the fire started that it has been so clear.
Because of the smoke I hadn’t bicycled since before the fire. Since the air was clear today I decided to go out for a spin. I bicycled 35 miles along the Front Range but I did not go up into the mountains.
Officials now report they are starting to get the … (5 comments)

colorado: Colorado Energy Efficiency Finance Summit - 08/05/10 03:48 PM
Colorado Energy Efficiency Finance Summit
I am a member of the Colorado Retrofit Working Group Finance Committee at the Governor’s Energy Office (GEO). Yesterday we held a Finance Summit with the intent of gathering bankers, investors and industry leaders together to discuss the need for financial solutions for the emerging market for Energy Efficient homes and buildings. The summit was held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel on 15th Street in downtown Denver.
Governor Bill Ritter was the keynote speaker followed by Gil Sperling from the DOE. Other speakers included Stephen Ponce-Pore from the Bank of Colorado—pioneer of the Colorado Energy Star … (1 comments)

colorado: Colorado Rocky Mountain Rainbow - 06/27/10 11:36 AM
Colorado Rocky Mountain Rainbow
I encountered an incredible rainbow yesterday. I was driving on highway 93 between Golden Colorado and Boulder. It’s a beautiful drive that follows along the edge of the Front Range. There were thick black clouds out to the east over the Denver Metro area where it seemed to be raining heavily.
Across the edge of the mountains the clouds were breaking up amid intermittent sunshine and rain. I was expecting a rainbow to pop up any moment when it seemed to instantly appear. It was a brilliant spectrum of colors and very bright. Unfortunately, it was some … (5 comments)

colorado: Colorado Clouds - 06/08/10 12:49 PM
Colorado Clouds
I like taking photos of different shapes and contrasts in nature. A few days ago I got some great cloud shots. The interesting thing about clouds is that no two are alike.
And if you look carefully, you can always see something in the pattern. I find it especially interesting how different people see different things.
What do you see in the clouds below?

colorado: High Temps in the High Country Causes Flooding - 06/08/10 11:11 AM
High Temps in the High Country Causes Flooding
My wife and I spent the weekend in Steamboat Springs Colorado. We got a nice little cabin right on the Yampa River at Steamboat Springs Campground. On the first day the temperature shot up over 90 degrees. The rapid snow melt caused so much run-off on the first night there the water rose about 6 inches causing flooding all around our cabin. All across the state the rivers and creeks are unseasonably high.
The water in Steamboat Springs Campground rose even higher on the second night but we were never in any danger. … (3 comments)

colorado: Colorado Rocky Mountain High - 06/03/10 09:57 AM
Colorado Rocky Mountain High
To be in the presence of the Rock Mountains—to see them, touch them and feel them—is to really understand what John Denver was singing about. I don’t think there is anything quite like it in the world.
These shots were taken inside Rocky Mountain National Park in Larimer County. The first photo is my absolute favorite. It seems to capture multiple dimensions in a single shot. Yet it doesn’t come close to the actual experience of what it’s like to be there. The last photo shows a stand of Aspen trees in the foreground.
I’m off tomorrow … (6 comments)

colorado: Colorado Energy Star Mortgage - 06/03/10 07:37 AM
Colorado Energy Star Mortgage
The Bank of Colorado, in partnership with the Governor’s Energy Office is offering a special financing product to Colorado residents. The Energy Star Mortgage offers qualified participants one discount point on mortgage rates to fund the purchase of green homes or the refi and green renovation of existing homes.
This is an extraordinary program that overlays existing loan products including conventional 30 year, FHA or 203k mortgage loans. In addition to current low rates, the discount point is used to buy-down the interest even further. With this program homeowners can fund energy-efficient upgrades, obtain a lower interest … (0 comments)

colorado: Lily Pads Reaching for the Sun - 06/03/10 07:36 AM
Lily Pads Reaching for the Sun
Last week I hiked to Cub Lake in the Rocky Mountain National Park. It was a five mile hike round-trip from the train entrance.  The lake was set among a very peaceful setting surrounded by spectacular mountain ranges. The entrance to the park is in Larimer County just a short drive from Boulder.
The lily pads were just beginning to emerge. You could see them rising up from under the water stretching to reach the sun. I was captivated by the simplicity of their beauty. Soon, the lake will be half full of them.

colorado: What is It? - 06/01/10 06:37 AM
What is It?
Can you spot the critter in the photo? What do you think it is?
Hint: The photo was taken in Rocky Mountain National Park on Friday of last week.
I went up with a friend for a day hike in the park. The weather was great and the water levels were quite high from the melting snows. The wildlife was openly moving about.

colorado: Rocky Mountain Reflections - 05/29/10 01:16 PM
Rocky Mountain Reflections
A friend and I drove into Rocky Mountain National Park yesterday. We drove up in the morning from Boulder and entered the park from the West side of Estes Park. The temperature was quite high—in the upper 80’s—which is a bit unusual for this time of year.
We hiked up to Cub Lake and back, which is about 5 miles round trip. The pictures below capture the reflections of the Rocky Mountains in Lake. It was really spectacular.  Words pale to describe the beauty and the splendor of it all. The photos speak for themselves.
Have a wonderful … (10 comments)

The Facts About Radon Gas in the Home – It’s Hazardous to Health
The Environmental Protection Agency has declared January as National Radon Action Month.  The purpose is to help educate the public about the health hazards of radon gas in the home and to identify steps consumers can take to protect themselves.
The video below, courtesy of the EPA, is a good summary of the facts about radon and why it is a concern you should be aware of. Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers and leads to 21,000 deaths every year. The surgeon general has … (3 comments)

Estes Park Colorado: A Mountain Wonderland at 7,522 Feet Above Sea Level
On Sunday my wife Hannele and I drove from Boulder up to Estes Park. It took us about 45 minutes along Highway 36 including a couple of stops along the way. Estes Park is an incredibly beautiful mountain town set in a valley surrounded by snowcapped mountain peaks up to 14,000 feet high.
The town sits near the entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park. We usually spend our time in the park or hiking the area around town when we go there. But on Sunday, we spent the … (1 comments)

Boulder Colorado Front Range Mountain Views: A Motivating Sight to Behold

I must say, it’s such a delight to live in here in Colorado along the Front Range. Almost anywhere you go around the area there are fabulous mountain views of the Front Range. I am always inspired to behold them and I never seem to get tired of looking at them.

The Front Range has many faces throughout the year. But no matter what the weather they stand strong and bold-pure wisdom incarnate. I don’t think I have ever looked away from the Mountain View here without … (5 comments)
