tomball: Arm wrestling for the bill - 04/14/13 10:31 AM
Life it seems is all about competing!
Even with friends that you are fond of,sometimes it is necessary to utilize strong arm techniques.
Case in point was our goodbye lunch with our favorite lender.  She had paid last time we lunched together and I made it clear that this was our treat.
She said no.  Ralph chimed in and playfully suggested that she and I arm wrestle for the check so we did.  As we started out I said ". I did tell you that I can lift a forty pound water bottle didn't I?"  She exclaimed an expletive and let me have the … (2 comments)

tomball: The Magic of Mel's Country Cafe in Huuffsmith Texas - 03/29/13 11:12 PM
Tucked on the edge of Tomball just past the Railroad Tracks on Stanolind Road, is a down home country cafe.
Specialties include chicken fried steak, chicken fried chicken, meatloaf, chicken and dumplings and other comfort foods.  With every meal you get to select two perfectly done vegetables and rolls or cornbread.  Both if you wish!
The specialty of the house is a Mel's Burger which is comprised of a pound each of hamburger patties, cheese, bacon and all the trimmings like lettuce, pickles, tomatoes, onions, ketchup, mayo, mustard etc.  and it come with a healthy portion of French fries.  If you actually consume … (3 comments)

tomball: Back Cracking - 03/21/13 09:03 AM

When you move a box and your back makes a cracking noise and feels like someone is stabbing you in the back with an ice pick, it is not a good sign.
Cracking when related to bones is never something you want to hear.  In this case with our move just a month away, having either of our backs out is more than a small glitch.  Since the back in question is the main mover, it is a general uh oh!
There are times to wait and see but this is not one of them.
Ralph called our favorite chiropractor and miraculously … (5 comments)

tomball: Baseball, is it still just a game - 03/17/13 10:13 PM

Although baseball season is still a few weeks away, this weekend was blesses with an opportunity to watch how much the children have grown both in stature and height.
There were tournaments scheduled all over the county.  The heat has begun earlier than usual and there were gusts of wind to give the bleacher experiences an extra flair.
This is the first year that our grandson has actually been on a team where the kids play all the positions... Including pitcher.
This year promises more excitement than past since the coaches will not play any of the positions.
Unfortunately the kids are not playing … (9 comments)

tomball: The value of an oil change - 03/10/13 12:58 PM
Some lessons come at a huge price.

Such was the case of my education about the importance of regular oil changes.

About thirty years ago my family moved from urban suburbia to the country.  It was a 28 mile trip from our suburban home to the country house.

During the relocation period we spent a lot of time going to and fro.

Then one day on the busiest road possible, my cars temperature exceeded the maximum allowed and billowing poofs of steam erupted from the hood area.

The car cut itself off and I drifted … (2 comments)

tomball: Basketball for 8 year old kids. - 02/23/13 12:42 PM
These kids today completely amaze me!  I can barely carry a basketball and walk at the same time but they can run up and down the court swapping the ball back and forth between hands and shoot the ball at the basket at the age of 8.  Scary!!  But it is surely fun and inspiring to watch.  Wish I was coordinated!!

tomball: Stylish Cow!! - 02/19/13 08:39 AM
Last night we got treated to a night out with one of our sons .

The place was an olde favorite that is now sort of outside our daily stomping grounds.

As we entered we noted that the greeting cow in the entry was duded out in maradi gras attire.

I  immediately visualized the cow on the side of the street watching the parades and participating in the other seasonal frivolity.  It was a fun thought.

Practicality is not always the highest and best use of our thought processes.  After all, someone went to the trouble of … (11 comments)

tomball: Unacceptable!!! - 02/02/13 08:36 AM
Today while we were at a basketball game , we witnessed a totally unacceptable outburst from a parent of another team playing before us.
The man, obviously the dad, was literally pushing a child of about ten years of age out the lobby of the sports facility while screaming at him "get out of the gym!
A group of parents and grandparents were sitting in the lobby at the time and were appalled to see his demeanor and the fact that the child had been reduced to crying.
As soon as they got outside we saw him continue to scream at the child and … (18 comments)

tomball: Olde Towne Christmas in Tomball - 12/09/12 12:37 PM

Christmas memories are some of our most cherished.  From childhood those memories surface every year that we live.

The people, sights and sounds of Christmas replay throughout our lives as we attempt to recreate the best of times to share with our friends and families.

Tomball Texas has been a part of almost all my Christmases since 1982.  Since I raised my sons there, the memories are very sweet.  The town was a true blessing in those days.  It continues to shine forth the meaning of Christmas in a day and time when that is not really embraced … (12 comments)

tomball: A Winning Weekend in Tomball Texas for Christmas 2012 - 12/06/12 12:12 PM

As you look about for what's to do and where's to go this weekend, there is a winning destination if you are anywhere near Houston.

Tomball Texas is just up the road from downtown and offers cultural education this weekend.

Settlers to Tomball in the mid 1800's were diverse.  Among them were a large number of German immigrants.

Many of the original merchants were also of German descent .  Many were farmers and with the rich soils and gently rolling terrain, it proved to be a profitable decision to settle there.

tomball: Lupe Tortilla - 11/21/12 10:43 AM
Perhaps it is the constant exposure to good Mexican food that creates the need to have it at least once a week. This week we traveled outside of our usual places to a restaurant called Lupe Tortilla on State Hwy 249 at Spring Cypress in northwest Houston.  It startled out in the Memorial area with one extremely crowded place. Now the chain is expansive and easy to find.  Today we stopped .Illustrated is what is named "Tex Mex.". A large cheese enchilada , tamale and a beef Taco.   All this is serve d with beans and rice.  Just right!

The restaurant has … (1 comments)

tomball: High demand for leases. - 11/20/12 08:53 AM
Even during the recessional times we have had over the past five years, one thing we can depend upon making the phones ring is lease houses.Owners are able to be more picky about the qualifications they require since there are lots of people wishing to lease.  This is probably due to the fact that loans are so difficult to get.  As the money tightens up, this is the effect. We have seen more activity on one lease in particular than any other one house we have marketed in a long time. The owners are investors who bought it as a foreclosure and then … (1 comments)

tomball: Tire Stability - 11/02/12 02:13 PM
This morning while doing our errands, I noticed that a truck in the lane to our left had a rear tire which was wobbling.Immediately my mind went back many years,  to a tranquil day just after I had the tires on the family car rotated and balanced.  At least that was what the tire shop had been asked to do.I had the car loaded for a weekend at the beach and in addition to my three sons, and food ; we even had the dog along for the trip.As I drove along the. country road we lived on, the  car began … (5 comments)

tomball: Memorable Performance - 10/27/12 11:32 AM
We need to be constantly aware that people expect us to do great things.  We have the real estate dreams of the general public in our hands.Ralph and I were reminded of this sobering truth one day when we were shopping in a local antique shoppe. After we had selected our purchase the sales lady saw our name tags and asked what part of the area we specialized in.We responded that we worked in North West Harris county, but our favorite area had been Tomball for about 27 years. She then asked if we knew a particular agent.  As it happened we had … (3 comments)

tomball: Grandparents Day... - 10/14/12 01:12 PM

A few days ago we went to a afternoon Tea at one of our grandsons school.

It was an opportunity to be entertained and to take part in their "book fair".

Talk about marketing!  Who can say "no" to a grandchild?

The event started in the gym where refreshments were served.  They even had cucumber sandwiches!  They really did serve tea too!

There were a couple of thank you and welcome speeches.

Then it was off to find your grandchild.  Ours was down two long hallways.  Classrooms have changed a lot since we were … (8 comments)

tomball: The worst lease house - 09/30/12 11:38 AM
Another stroll through the canyons of my mind brought forth the memory of an outstandingly awful lease experience. The house was a great old country cottage on acreage.  It leased quickly to a tenant who paid well for the first few months and then...We went through the eviction process and the tenant came to the office to illustrate her incredibly nasty vocabulary skills. When she had actually vacated the house we had a toxic waste dump to deal with. She had animals all over in the house and there was animal soil everywhere.Cleaning the place up took days.  We had an agent working with … (2 comments)

tomball: Gertie the Goat - 09/30/12 09:03 AM
While searching through my brain for possible blog ideas, a memory surfaced. In the early 1980s I helped my parents move from their suburban home to the country. It had been their dream to have a couple of acres close to a small town.  They wanted to retire and raise sheep or goats, and have a large garden.  An additional plus as far as the dream went was to have a pond that they could stock. We found it right on the edge of Tomball Texas.    It was an old farm house with a true country kitchen, two bedrooms, a wood stove, a big … (3 comments)

tomball: Communication..... - 09/16/12 12:47 PM
It has been said that listings are the life blood of our business.  That is only part of the equation.

Communication is a more and more vital tool.  Without that we can have unlimited listings and  no way to let folks know about them!

The photo is of the first cell tower I ever saw.  It is near Waller on FM 2920.  I first saw it in the early 1980s before cell phones became
common.

Little did I know what the future held. Of course that was before most of the modern technology we now enjoy.

tomball: Faith of our fathers.... - 09/16/12 12:23 PM

Our market area includes several small communities.  Each of them has at least one small antique church.

Many demominations are represented, and all of these antiques have a lot of charm.  Obviously these were built with great craftsmanship.

Each one is surrounded with beautiful old trees.  Each also evoke feelings of love and memories of evenings spent with family and friends.

In a day of mega congregations seeing these 100 year old treasures scattered about the countryside is a reminder of how much our communities and values were built.

So much of our today's have been … (0 comments)

tomball: Mobile Homes AND Mansions! - 08/21/12 07:04 AM
What do those have in common?  More than you might think!

Both of them have current owners and potential buyers.  Both of them are loved by someone, and both function as a roof over someone's head.

They represent a substantial investment to their owners respectively and both provide a prude of ownership.

One brings significantly more in price than the other, but in reality is not more important.

When I started in Real Estate I had a serious snob problem.  I was showing listing and selling in the most upscale markets in the city of Houston.  I … (2 comments)
