SPRING HIKE

By Diane Sawdon

All month I have been plagued with the thought that I have nothing to say this month. For those who know me well, I know it is hard for you to believe that I have nothing to say. I am seldom at a loss for words. And, often, they are not nice words that slip so smoothly from my lips.

Alas, this is not the case. Looking back over the thirty one days of March, I realize that all sorts of spurts of occurrences banged against me this month. Some for the good and very positive and some totally negative and out of my control. Ahhhhhhhhhhhh, you guessed it. Those are the ones that stuck in my psychic craw.

The calendar told me that Spring arrived on March 20th. Being an avid gardener, the arrival of said season is important to me. I guess someone forgot to tell Mother Nature that March 20th came and went and the Goddess of All Things Natural continued to assult me with snow, rain, hail, wind, more snow, rain, hail and wind. I will type this very quietly----just in case----but maybe Spring is finally here. The sun is shining high in the blue sky today. Thank you!

To be told a very good friend might have cancer was like being punched in the stomach and thrown out the door. I learned a very long time ago that life is not fair, but this was too close for comfort, not fair, unjust and totally WRONG!!! My friend was blessed---need I say more??

Okay, let me expound on Home Owner Associations........one volunteers for a position, does it for two years, listens to people moan and groan, watches neighbor turn against neighbor, and then when it is time for one to "retire" from one's duties, no one else wants to come out of their respective woodwork to tackle the position. Ahhhhhhhhhhhh!

I did something for myself this month. It was a totally selfish decision, but one that I made and I am sticking to it. I have joined a place where there are three "M"s. No men, no mirrors and no makeup! It is just women working out and I have found some new heroes. There are women there who are in their late 70s and early 80s and they show up every morning, with a smile on their face, and radiating happiness at seeing the sun come up for another day. They greet each other with joy and are each other's support system. When I am old----no laughing permitted-----I want to be just like these gals.

I went back to work this month and I was thrilled to return. Why you ask?? I work at Prospector's Nursery in Nevada City and it is a joyful job. The owners make the best bosses and it is a happy place to spend your work hours. My co-workers make the day fly by quickly and gardeners are usually a positive group of people.

Are you asleep yet?? Just one last thought. I joined facebook. I know, the 15 year old daughter of a good friend told me that facebook was for losers, but can I tell you the fun I have had connecting with all sorts of people from my past?? The icing on the cake was two of my former kindergarten students found me. One of those students is now 18 and in college and the other is 14. For me, it is a lesson in youth to communicate with them.

April is just around the corner. The Easter Bunny better get busy making those Easter Baskets for those three adorable granddaughters of mine.
