I've discovered a great way to increase my followers and get good folks to follow, specifically real-estate-related folks on twitter. I set myself up on TweetDeck and then did a search on "active rain". It becomes a column in TweetDeck where you can easily keep updated on everyone who has set up twitter to tweet whenever they write a blog post on active rain.
So now, whenever I am on TweetDeck (which is how I usually interface with twitter (it is much more user friendly) I can peruse both the twitter profile and the active rain profile of anyone who is currently or recently been blogging on ActiveRain and sending to twitter. Then I follow them on twitter, read the blog and comment, sometimes follow them on ActiveRain as well, and a relationship begins... It is a great way to grow both sides of your social media relationships.
Also, while you are at it, connect everything to FaceBook as well. There are several ways to do this. I have connected my twitter status to automatically update my FaceBook page (using the application setting on FaceBook), that way everything in my status goes on FaceBook, including my ActiveRain automatic tweets. I could also have chosen to just use the TweetDeck utility that allows you to update both when you Tweet in TweetDeck. I Chose the Twitter method so that if I am on Twitter itself (instead of the TweetDeck interface) for any reason, it still updates FaceBook. You can also choose to directly update FaceBook from active rain. For me this misses the stuff from twitter, so is not as effective. Just don't do both - you will end up with each of your ActiveRain blogs going up twice every time on FaceBook.
I am still a novice at all this social media stuff, anything I can do to make it easier, I am all for!
