Southwest Florida Shuffle .......

Hello Folks,

From the first of May until the end of October every year is Stingray season on the beaches of Southwest Florida. The first thing most locals will tell you is to 'Shuffle" your feet as you walk in the surf. By shuffling your feet, you will scare off any stingrays before you have a chance to step on them.

This mornings walk in the calm surf along Bonita Beach revealed numerous stingrays. It doesn't matter how big or small they are, if you step on them they will nail you with the barb in their tail out of defense.

Now that would be a neat thing to see, adn good advice for novice beachwalkers!

Sean - ah yes, I remember having to do the shuffle during certain seasons on the southern Cal beaches.

So I assume you wear sandals or something. They are so flat they would be easy to walk on.

Actually I walk barefoot. Wearing sandles would not protect you from getting stuck by the barb. When you step on a stingray, they flick their tale upward against your leg. Typicallt pushing the barb into you calf area. ...... At leats that is what I've read. Knock on wood, I have never been stung by these animals, but I'm sure my day will come as often as I am in the water walking.

Mike ..... Southern Cal has many stingrays? I've only been in the Pacific ocean once in my life, all I remember is that the water was COLD!!!
