Road Trip - There Were No Roads But There Were Lots Of Fish

By
Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Real Estate Centre Inc., Brokerage

No roads lead to Elsas, Ontario.  Located 459 miles north of Toronto, the only ways in are by train or plane.  Why would anyone want to visit Elsas?  For the fishing, the beauty and the peace and quiet.

For a half dozen years or so, a group of assorted friends, and friends of friends have made the trek to spend a week  in May fishing.  This year two of the "regular's" sons were invited to go along.  My nephew Justin was one of them.

These photos were taken by Justin and his father.  As you can see by his catch, I would think that Justin has earned his stripes and will be invited back next year.

Oh boy, you got me.  I'll have to ask him what kind of fish they caught.  Yep that was snow.  My father in law got smart this year and took his snowmobile suit.  Luckily they stayed in cabins.

Jenny this is so great!  My brothers (5) and my Dad, uncles all the 'males' used to fly into a lake in Canada and go fishing every year.  I never went........

What my Mom created was a trip for the 'ladies' in Mpls....staying at the downtown Radison, Dayton's next store and lunches, dinners and more shopping.  ahhh that was so much fun with lots of laugher, shopping and just plain fun.

Oh how I love the guys fishing trips!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jenny,

Gorgeous pictures. Loved the fish, but looking at the snow and the way the guys are dressed, thought that I would rather stay in Florida.

It sort of reminded me the time we were in the Arctic, in a nice way of course, but I remember those polar days when the sun would go to the horizon but then bounces from it goes up. If you walk into the streets at 2 or 3 AM, it is a strange feeling like everything stays, but people are all gone. It is so unusual to have a day look and the night feel. Takes time to learn and get used.

I once came home from work, turned on the TV and fell asleep in the armchair. Woke up at 10, and did not know whether it was 10 AM nest morning, and so I was late for work, or it was still the same day, 10 PM. Took me some time to figure out.

Hi Jenny... if you can't drive there because there are no raods, can this really be classified as a "road" trip? ;)  Looks like a great adventure though, regardless!

Jenny - Wonderful post and photographs! The fish in the photo titled open wide is called a Walleye and a beautiful one at that. We use to catch them all the time in Minnesota.

The other fish on the stringer are called Northern Pike!

Jenny - The sunset photographs are absolutely beautiful.

GoogleMaps couldn't find Alsas but suggested Elsas.  Is this the same place?  Elsas is between Timmins and Wawa north of a highway that connect the two towns and is also perhaps 50 to 100 km east of Missinaibi Provincial Park and seems to fit your description of the mileage north of TO.

Hi Anna - That's great.  While the guys were off telling fish stories, you were making your own memories with your mom. (and being pampered by the sounds of it.)

Hi Tony and Darcy - I saw my nephew this weekend.  He said the first day they were there they got sunburned and the next day they were wearing snowmobile suits.  He asked me if I wanted to come next year.  I graciously declined lol. A little too remote for me.

Hi Jon - Did you ever do a post on your trip to the Arctic?  I'd love to see the photos.  You should do something and post to our new Road Trips group.  You must have some great stories.

Oh Steve - you are so funny - They did have to drive to a place called Capreol to catch the train.  So, does that count now??? lol

Hi Dan - I forgot to ask Justin about the dock.  I wouldn't want to fall in that water.

Hi Judy - When I saw Justin's photos I just had to do a story on the fishing trip.  I know he enjoyed being with his dad and grandfather and the other guys.

Hi Caron - I know my in-laws still have fish in their freezer from his trip.

Hi Cynthia - I can't take credit from these photos, nor was I on the trip, but I thought they were so neat that I had to share.

Hi Bob - Thanks for the feature.  You are so astute.  You must know your fish.  It is indeed a walleye.  He said they caught Pike and Pickeral and forget the other.  I like your new casual photo.

Hi Mary - they caught the train in Capreol which is north of Sudbury, Ontario.  You may have heard of "the big nickel"?  Sudbury was a big mining town. The train trip was 4 1/2 hours long with great scenery they said.

Hi Marc - Thanks for correcting the typo.  It was indeed Elsas that they visited.  I've gone back and corrected the spelling in the post.  I think it was even hard to find Elsas on the map.

Hi Jim - My father in law is 77 and he's already looking forward to next year's trip.  I'm hoping maybe one of my sons will be able to go.  I would like the train trip but would probably skip the fishing and sit by the woodstove all week with a few good books lol.

Jenny - I must have had a brain fart, I just noticed that I had forgot to click on the Gold Star for your feature. I fixed it for you and yes I do know my fish!
