Use Your Head For Something Other Than a Hat Rack.

Critical ThinkingGrowing up when I would always do something stupid and be caught in the act by my Mom the advice came back to me was,

Use Your Head For Something Other Than a Hat Rack.

Not that many of us are wearing that many hats these days, but it is a cross generational piece of advice whether we are assisting client's with applying our best knowledge in real estate or working our way through life in general. I am talking about the lost art of critical thinking. Do not be sheep people. Use your head!!

I think it may be a lost art form. We go to college for example and are challenged about the way the world works from looking at many different subjects.

To be a good critical thinker we have to make our OWN mind up about what is real and what is if I can put it bluntly, a lie. Our perception is our reality, and we can change our reality in an instant by changing our thinking. Do you believe a yellow light on a traffic signal means stop safely if you can or it means accelerate hard through the intersection to beat the red light? How about the why of the situation? Isn't a yellow light giving you enough time to stop and not get hit by another car wanting to jump their green light on the other side?

The media in all its forms, web, print and TV news bombards us with messages constantly. Then there are other people's speech and opinion. You can nod politely at all of this, but be a SMART critical thinker and make up your own mind about what you believe. Just cause someone says something or you read it in print, DOES NOT MAKE IT TRUE!!

Gary, you brought up a subject close to my heart. I believe the most important thing schools should teach is critical thinking. I try to teach my kids to question the things they hear or read and to think for themselves.

The media focusues on sensationalism and sometimes shock value in order to grab attention. It is up to us as parents and responsible adults to be able to differentiate truth from fiction and to teach that to our children. Great post Gary!

It's becoming easier and easier to never have to come across an opposing opinion that would force you to think about and defend your own.  It's often amazing and depressing what people will believe when presented with nothing more than a statement and zero info to back it up.  Critical thinking is becoming a lost art!

With all the different personalities out there, what works for one may not necessarily work for another. All I would say is give it a try and see if you can tweak it to suit your personality. Otherwise, just move on. I love critical thinking - you know that.

No one can argue with the premise of your post.  It is "spot-on" in all respects.  I especially love your Title though, since my Dad frequently used that expression when "advising" his children.

Gary - Love the pic:)  I never heard that piece of advice, but it is a sound one.  I suppose I'm still a "hat rack" here and there.

I have not heard this for awhile-my dad used to say it! We are striving for this with our gradboys-we don't have the TV on and they do not have any video games-none! Their home is loaded with books. It is a battle as all their friends have a different scenario. Great post -love it!

Gary,

Good sound thinking! Many do take the easy way out and don't think just follow the crowd or let someone else do their thinking for them.

Part of critical thinking is a wilingness to look at both sides of any issue we are faced with.  Unfortunately so many are linear in the thinking process. This is not necessarily anyone's fault . With all the exposure to different views in the media  these days it is hard not to at least have the seeds for critical thinking planted.

You've just hit on one of my pet peeves.  Often I've complained how schools are telling our children what to think instead of teaching how to think for themselves. People seem so ready to believe everything they hear without questions.

Wait ...I just got blasted with a bolt of energy......my last comment put me over 100,000 points .....and I can remember the momentous moment by declaring my head is a hat rack and I am OK with it.  Not exactly how I thought I would hit that

mountain top...I thought at least a feature blog would put me over...Oh well...I will take the burst of energy and be happy with it. See....you are that middle of the night person!!
