How Do You Perceive Your Competition?

By
Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Concierge SL0475285

For years I thought of another successful agent in my market place as a "list ‘em and leave ‘em" kind of guy.  Yes, he's a listing machine, taking over 200 listings a year!  There was a negative "buzz" about him amongst agents that I personally adopted and believed. He then joined my office.  Turns out he was nothing like the "buzz" that I had been lead to believe.  We've been friends for 7 years and learn a lot from each other!  Another top producing agent team was also not well liked by most agents around them.  I've become close friends with them as well.  The negativity was based on them being aggressive and demanding and created resentment amongst other agents in the office, characteristics that most top producers have and need, to produce at high levels.

I believe that there is a certain envy of top producers that cause others to create this negative "vibe" and misconception about them.  I love when people approach me and say, "Wow, you're nothing like we expected!"

Again, don't judge a book by its cover!

Good post David, I think a lot of negativity (especially with first year agents) comes from jealousy and insecurity, but once we get to know some of these successful agents and they take us under their wing, we have a new found respect and admiration for the job and service they perform for our communities.  Have a great week!

I agree I have heard agents run down other agents and wondered why sometimes the reason they run them down I can see that they maybe are that way but most of the time when I learn to know them I see a totally different person

Great post David!  You are so right!  Perception of top producers is based on competitive envy and the fact that you do need to be aggressive in sales and marketing to make it to that level.  We are also friends with other top producers in our area and they are nothing like people perceive them to be.  That's why we are also very involved with the community, so people know the real us.

David, jealousy pure and simple. Most of the Top Producers I have met are great people. You don't get to be successful by being a jerk. And if you do, it won't last.

I know the feeling. I get that sometimes, also.

We have the same pettiness in lending:

"Oh, he rapes his clients with 3 points a loan."

"He only does subprime so he can bury those people"

"She doesn't know anything about the biz, she's just a sales rep with fake boobs"

In the words of every teenager.. What....EVER
