Hi Myrl, Now that is a sight I don't believe that I have ever seen before?  Those guys are all just hanging out and basking in the sun. You can't blame them.  But, do they ever become a nusance to people?

Hi Myrl:

I LOVE this photo!!!

The colors in the sky, the building, the gang sunning themselves...

FANTASTIC!

Sandy - The problem with the sea lions is there sheer numbers at this part of the wharf.  There is an odor that I can't convey over the internet, and they are noisy.  They are a sight to behold, but you wouldn't want to dine next to them:-)

Toula - The "gang" sunning themselves. . .That's truer than you can imagine:-)

Hi Myrl - I've been there and seen this! Quite a sight, but you're right, the stench is unbelievable!

Debi - I have a solution.  I think they should build a man-made island in the bay (away from the wharf).  They need to tow these existing floating decks out to the new island and attach them.  Hopefully, the sea lions would then have a home of their own, without encroaching so much on the wharf.  The other solution is to call in Planned Parenthood, and do a little spay and neuter operation:-)  We do it with cats and dogs, why not sea lions:-)

There must be way too many fish in the (nearby) sea.  These guys are way to comfortable -- man-made rocks to to sleep on.  Wow.

Myrl,

It has been years since I have not seen the sea lions at Fisherman's Warf.  Wow, they sure have multiplied since then!   You brought back some happy memories of a past trip to San Fran (much less the noise made by the sea lions but their sight and San Fran in general).  Thank you for sharing this beautiful photo.  I like the title!  :)

Hi Myrl, it seems a little crowded at the moment. They haven't found a way to deal with the sea lion population I see. As always another great photo of a place I wouldn't have gotten to see. Thank for sharing it with us.

Jim - If you price housing and meals in San Francisco, you have an appreciation for "the good life" those critters are living:-)

Gary - The population varies, and is larger some times more than others.

Jim - It is amazing, but when I look at that picture, I immediately hear the barking and the get the smell.

Suesan - They're in San Francisco, a city that believes in Planned Parenthood and birth control, but not with the sea lions:-)

Ann - It is their sheer numbers that create the smell.

I saw somethng similar in Oregon, once, but not NEARLY this many...oh my goodness!  I can imagine the noise, because the ones we saw were very noisy and there were not this many!

Hi Myrl, My goodness, I don't think there is one inch left for one more sea lion! Judging by the other comments, I'm glad we don;t have smellavision on our computers! LOL! Such a great photo!

Hi Myrl, This is a great photo and one that definitely reflects the idea that the sea lions took over and the tourists ended up liking them and now are a part of the culture there. We seem to be in the throws of just such a change in at the Children's pool ( a beach set aside protected by a man made cove sponsored by Scripps family and dedicated to the city for a children's beach) which became the new home of the sea lion and there is now a great battle underway to decide who gets the beach.

Hi Myrl---that is quite a bunch of lions.  People have discussed the odor----they can be quite noisy too can't they?  (I like your picture disclaimer by the way----I feel similarly)

Richard - Fisherman's Wharf is my favorite San Francisco destination as well!

Jennifer - I suspect it would be difficult to find another spot that's as compacted with those critters, as Pier 39.

Mary - "Smellavision". . .Now why do I suspect the computer gods will come up with that in the future:-)

William - You are pretty much right on about the sea lions.  What likely started out as a few, didn't take long to grow into a large herd:-)   It does become a dilemma trying to find the balance between tourist enjoyment of the critters, and a nuisance.  Knowing San Francisco, and the city's knack for "creative" ideas. . .I'm staying tuned:-)

Heather - "Heavenly" isn't exactly the way I would describe the aroma:-)

Charles - Yes, they are very noisy.  The sound echoes off the walls of the surrounding buildings.  The sea lions have an attitude too. . .The absolutely act like they OWN that part of the wharf:-)
