Yes, today is my 50th birthday. And while I have been agonizing about it while it loomed over the horizon I am heartily grateful the suspense is over and it is finally here!
I am having a wonderful day, filled with all kinds of surprises. My friends at the office threw a little "luncheon" for me, complete with a sign saying that this was not a party, but a luncheon. You see, for months now, I have been saying to all that I DID NOT WANT A PARTY. I DID NOT WANT TO CELEBRATE TURNING 50. There were balloons, flowers, great food and a wonderful cake homemade by Melissa Ford!
I also a wonderful friend, Robyn Stephanou who has made it her mission in life to desensitize me about turning 50. For the past few weeks she has inundated me with cards in the mail, the envelops of which have been decorated with the number 50. Notes on them to the postman, telling him my age. Posts on my facebook wall counting down the days. I hadn't heard from her today, and I actually thought to myself that it would be pretty funny if she forgot today, as she has driven completely batty for the last 10 days counting down to my 50th birthday.
I came home from the great lunch at work. Max came home from school and said that the bus driver told him to tell me happy birthday. I said how did the bus driver know it was my birthday? Well, there is an announcement on the sign coming into my neighborhood!! I drove right by and didn't see it. Well, my friend Robyn was over in my neighborhood at 7:30 AM posting that sign. I called her and she just cracked up! I knew it had to be her as soon as Max told me it was there!
My birthday celebrations last for the month of September and I really didn't expect to be happy about this particular birthday, but the surprises keep coming. A good friend here in the rain, I won't mention who so as not to embarrass him, sent me a huge box of presents. Wonderfully thoughtful presents, each one individually wrapped, and I felt like a kid in a candy store opening them. My best friend Leann did the same, an entire bag of little gifts! Russell Lewis and Jason Crouch got together and called me from Texas! I missed it but they left the best message. I got so many greetings on facebook that they alone would have made my day. My son Max said happy birthday at 6:30 AM, so he could "beat the rush', and my college boy Mike called this afternoon. He left my present here... a card that said happy 30th birthday. He gave my son Max strict instructions. I looked at it and said... "it's a 30th birthday card". Max was cued to say "no way a hot fox like you could be 50"! They both gave me great gifts. The phone has been ringing all day! I love by birthday!
And there was more stuff that I can't fit here! And the day isn't over! We are meeting friends in West Chester to enjoy the last Swinging Thursday of the summer! It's a beautiful day out and it promises to be a beautiful night. I am going to wear the t-shirt my girl Melissa gave me that says: Will Sell Husband for Wine. Too funny!
So, for today, September 3, 2009, I am very thankful to be alive, and to be so lucky to have such wonderful people in my life.
