I'll Bet We are "Smarter Than a Congress" When It Comes To Fixing Our Health Care System (Or Is It Sick Care?)...Let's Try Here In The Halls Of Active Rain! (1st Post in a Series)

Reforming Our Current "Sick Care Management System" to be More like the Health Care Systems Elsewhere on the Planet?

YES, I believe that we will have a reformed so-called "Health Care System" passed by both Houses of Congress and signed by our energetic, intelligent, likable and very well-spoken President.  I personally couldn't be more pleased with his leadership on so many fronts.  Can any of us Thinking Active Rain Loyals be truly pleased with our current system that spends 1.5 times more money per patient than does the next highest Country on their patients?  And, our system is ranked something like 37th on the Planet for results in health care!  This is not right and should be fixed pronto.  At the current rate of expenditure, our Government will be spending about 20% of its budget (and Deficit, ugh) on what is called Health Care, by the year 2020!  Let's see what we can come up with here over the next couple of weeks and ship our ideas off to our President.  HELP ME!

Leadership in Washington D.C. on Many Fronts!

I served, during a long sabbatical leave from my Michigan State University Professorship, in the Executive Branch for 1.5 years, at the end of Carter and the start of Reagan and found that oh so many Cabinet employees (I hate to call them Bureaucrats, but they are, in reality) almost sat around waiting for word "On-High" as to what to work on.  Well, it appears that they have been quite busy since soon after Barack Obama came to town!  It seems like something new comes out almost everyday.  Our President is drawing criticism for working on too many major issues at once.  I say HURRAH, for it is refreshing to see signs that the approximately 8000 Executive Branch 'Bureaucrats' are being given direction and that they are producing!

Why is it so Difficult to Get Away From "Sick Care Management" and on to True Health Care?

Back to the subject (you have just witnessed that age-old professorial drift, off subject!) of Sick Care Management or Health Care.  We certainly do not have much more than the former , but we surely want the latter, Right?  You and I would have plenty to say were we put on a panel to draft a Program that would be sustainable, enable maintenance of true Health and involve our entire population, wouldn't we?  Mark my words:  We will not hear most of the obvious solutions that we would probably list coming out of Congress.  There are too many Sacred Cows, as they say!  And, all 435 members of the House of Representatives and 33 members of the Senate are up for re-election in less than 14 months!

Here is your Assignment to Get Started:

Sit on one of the benches inside your closest Wal-Mart Superstore, or a similar department store with high traffic, and watch the customers go by for 30 minutes.  Then, sit down and turn your major conclusions into a fundamental solution or 2 that would be necessary to have a true Health Care System in the United States of America.  You are urged to add ONE COMMENT to this Post so that we Active Rainers can develop an intelligent, no-holds-barred, no sacred-cows solution to fixing our non-system!  The most important problem facing the health of this Country is OBVIOUS! There are many others that we will uncover. I look forward to hearing from you after you sit at that Super Store for your 30 minutes, thinking all the while about health problems as they pass you bye and what we should do to correct them in the future.  We just might be "Smarter Than a Congress" since we do not run for re-election!

The American poor are not only the indigent, or homeless, or jobless.  I define poor as those who work 1 or 2 jobs, still can't make ends meet, have healthcare... BUT if they lose the job, or develop a dreaded "illness", heaven forbid... they will soon be indigent or bankrupt, and possible dead... due to our current state of health care.   Why or why, can someone tell me why, we are the only industrialized country which does not provide FREE  health care to all its citizens????  (albeit funded sometimes by taxes and sometimes by government subsidies or a combo)

Thirty-nine other countries have provided their citizens with the freedom from fear of getting sick.  (including Italy where my brother lives, England where I have cousins and aunts, and Malta where I have many relatives).  Getting seriously sick is something that will happen to all of us, ending with the ultimate sick of death.   I do not follow the logic of those who say we must not do this.  Governments come and go... ours will be around for a long time.  We are blessed to live in America, unless you get a terminal illness and have your insurance cancelled.  Our lawmakers always seem able to come up with trillions of dollars to fight wars... and they will find the money to care for its people.  Only if we demand it.  Thanks for listening.

To be fair, the American tax payer spends way to much money on subsidized health care right now.  If we do away with Federal Employees insurance, Medicaid & Medicare and all the rest,  allow the Health Insurance companies to control all health care benefits in the USA and compete for our business to drive down their costs.

When you think about it, at the present time there are millions of tax payers who already help subsidize health care for Gov, State & Fed employees, but get no subsidized health care option in return.  If those tax payers have no affordable health care options, they should not be forced into subsidizing others!  We should level the playing field and cut their tax burden accordingly

Charlie it is coming soon: I have been distracted with all the Congressional haranguing and there are so many ways to go in discussing this vitally important matter!

Elaine, My sentiments precisely.  This seems to get lost in the politics but it is so obvious to the rest of us who are not afraid to help those less fortunate.

Yes, Steve, we subsidize so many things around the back of the barn.  Hopefully, we will start to do things more up front in the Sick/Health Care arena.  Thanks for chiming in!!!
