Fall Mums: Voorhees, Cherry Hil, Evesham, NJ by Leander McClain, Realtor
This weekend, on my way back from the dentist, I ran across a farm in my neighborhood that was selling mums & pumpkins. As I pulled in, the farmer was coming in from the field with a load of freshly dug mums & pumpkins. The flowers were absolutely beautiful. There were yellows, reds, rust, purples, whites and more. Each flower was full of blooms. I just knew that my wife would love these on the front steps of our home.
After, the farmer parked his vehicle, we struck up a conversation. I found out that Ken Kazahaya and his wife Amy were the owners of the farm. The name of the farm is Natauset Farms. Amy's ancestors were Lenape Indians. In coming up with a name for the farm, they wanted a name that paid honor to the history of the area which included horses. Because there isn't a name for horse in Lenape, they used Natauset which means "one who seeks horses". Ken explained that in the spring they will also be selling spring flowers.
Ken also told me that Natauset Farm is seeking an individual to implement the food production component of their 70-acre preserved farm, which would involve starting a new Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) operation on a part of the farm. The farm is currently in use as an equine operation and planted in hay. Community Supported Agriculture consists of a community of individuals who pledge support to a farm operation so that the farmland becomes, either legally or spiritually, the community's farm, with the growers and consumers providing mutual support and sharing the risks and benefits of food production. Share holders in the CSA operation pledge in advance to cover the anticipated costs of the farm operation and managers salary. In return, they receive shares in the farm's bounty throughout the growing season, as well as satisfaction gained from reconnecting to the land and participating directly in food production.
The farm is located near the intersection of Springdale, Evesham and White Horse Roads. It is located not far from Routes 295, 70 & 73.
