Competition Cheating You In Google? Report Them.

By
Mortgage and Lending with Arizona Wholesale Mortgage Inc.

I have enjoyed some pretty good success when it comes to Google and my Arizona mortgage business.

However, every once in a while, a spammy website comes up above me.  I thought the Google algorithm was pretty good at knocking these sites out of the index, but not always, apparently.

I'll give you a good example.  There is another mortgage company in Arizona that likes to use black hat techniques.  One day, they passed me by.

Now if they passed me because I was lazy and wasn't keeping up with the demands of supplying Google with good information, so be it.  But they cheated.

I did a little research by Googling their domain name and I found that they had set up free blogs on many, many free blogging sites.  (But for some reason, they were not on ActiveRain.)

Anyway, all of their blogs were entirely devoid of any information.  Just a short paragraph, with keywords that linked to their spammy site.  (When I say "spammy", I mean that their website didn't make a whole lot of sense to humans, because they just kept repeating "Arizona Mortgage" over and over again.)  Grammatically, it was a mess, but I guess Google liked it.

But they used dirty tricks to knock me out of position, so I reported them to Google.

Google is a computer.  Or a computer algorithm to be more exact.  Sometimes humans need to be involved.  If you are getting cheated, visit Google at:

http://www.google.com/contact/spamreport.html

Now please, please, please don't go around reporting your competition just because they are better at the search engine game then you are.  You'll be wasting your time and the time of everyone that has a legitimate complaint.

But if your competition is using:

  • Hidden text or links
  • Misleading or repeated words
  • Page does not match Google's description
  • Cloaked page
  • Deceptive redirects
  • Doorway pages
  • Duplicate site or pages
  • Or any other black hat type search engine techniques, report them to Google.  It took a couple of months, but the local mortgage company that I reported isn't indexed by Google at all anymore.  (At least at the time of this writing.)

It's a tough market and we need to be tough.  But fair...  Tough but fair.

    Karen,

From my IP (deepest Florida) you site ranks #6 for Arizona FHA loan and #21 for Arizona FHA Mortgage (top of 3rd page on Google)

I have read that Google is testing regional differences for the same search terms and they are also playing with results based previous searches and browsing from your IP..

I had a competitor for "net branch" terms spam every blog and forum they could find with the same message and link back to their site to improve ranking.

It only worked for a brief time.

I will em you about a few tweaks you can do to help improve your rank..

Excellent info!  I hate when those doorway sites get above me when they offer no redeeming value!

I like your attitude!  Now I know what to do when I find a website that steals my meta tags which include my own name!

    Karen,

Good blog - just keep adding and changing your content and you will climb in the rankings.  Companies copy us all the time, but we just try to stay one step ahead of them.

Good article.  I do not understand all the Black Hat Techniques, but I will certainly watch for the things you are talking about.

I've seen some competitors who seem to "stuff" their sites with stupid terms to the point that it's not logical reading. There's good SEO but there's also stupid text for visitors!

Michael: I have a competitor that ranks very high in the search engines, They never refresh their content, don't have a blog, the site is almost entirely Flash, they use very few keywords and I can't, for the life of me, figure out why they are ranking so high. Black hat? I don't know how to figure out if they are using black hat techniques or not.

Hi Michelle--  That is pretty unusual.  I would have to guess a couple of things.  Like, I think they have probably been around a long time.  Google does seem to give more respect to well seasoned websites.  But the lack of information is pretty odd.  They probably just have lots and lots of inbound links and that increases their importance in Google.  One thing you can never stop doing is working on your inbound links...

THanks for the info. I recently was penalized by google and can't figure why. Even if I google my first and last name it doesn't show my site on the first page http://www.karinaleal.com

I sent an email to google and haven't received any answers yet. I used to get at least 10 leads daily from my site and now am down to zero...

If you would have any additional information, please do let me know. Thanks, Karina.

Karina--  I looked at your site and you have three things that I would change.  First of all, THE TITLE.  It's way too wordy and Google needs you to get to the point.

You know that giant text that you have on your page?  I would use THAT for my page title.

Finally, no offense, but unless you are world famous or something, I would never, ever use my name as a domain.  It tells Google nothing.  You might as well have random letters between the www and the com.  Google doesn't know what a "Leal" is.  It's not in the dictionary and it's essentially worthless as a domain name.

Now that you are so far back, you may want to consider dumping that old domain name and picking out something that makes more sense for your content.

DelrayandBocaRaton.com is available right now from GoDaddy.  I would spend the $8.95 and transfer all of your old content to this new domain.  And then be sure to take down the old one.
