OCTOBER:  Breast Cancer Awareness MonthOctober, Brerast Cancer Awareness Month

October is BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH and to start the month, Susan G. Komen for the Cure® announced that the foundation is distributing an unprecedented $100 million has been committed to immediate patient assistance in 2009 alone

As well, the Foundation has committed another $100 million to research scientists to establish a cure!  This is the largest commitment to breast cancer research funding by a single nonprofit organization, targeting 81 universities and hospitals in 27 states and five countries, EVER! These grants represent research with the highest likelihood of producing positive results for breast cancer patients during the next decade.

NFL & Breast Cancer Awareness

Even the NFL is pitching in this month to help with the race for the cure.  Games throughout October have been designated Breast Cancer Awareness games. Coaches, players, referrees and game staff will wear apparel and pins with the pink ribbon/NFL shield during October games.  Wear your  THINK PINK ribbon to the October 11, Carolina Panthers game against the Washington Redskins. (GO PANTHERS!)   Thanks, Panthers, for participating in SUCH a worthwhile cause!

Every 2.5 minutes, a new case of breast cancer is diagnosed.  Digital mammography is one of the best tools that help in early detection.  This is a painless procedure--regardless what you've heard, and worth the time it takes for an appointment.  The American Cancer Society says that women should have mammograms starting at age 40 and every year afterwards.  Most insurance companies pay the full fee but, there are many women who do not have insurance.  We can help by donating a mammogram for these women.  Go ahead--click below--it won't cost you a penny!

Donate Mammograms

Please pass this information along to YOUR friends and family.  Chances are we've all been touched somehow by this horrific disease and with our help, a cure is on the way.  Please read this, donate a mammogram  (thank you) and pass the message on...

How cool is this. Our office has participated in the Susan Komen walk for many years in support. It's also been interesting watching the "think pink" campaign show up on the football field in any number of the pink variations!

Hi Debe,

We recently held a "Paint the Town Pink" celebration here and raised $12,000 for the foundation.  Mineral Wells isn't very big, so we were all surprised that the town was able to raise that much money.  There is a group from our hospital that is participating in the walk this year...their name is "Hoofing for Hooters."  At our recent Zonta Club meeting we watched a video about breast cancer and the walk.  I don't think there was a dry eye in that room when the video was over.

Hi Russell!  Thanks and I know you participated personally, didn't you?  It has been refreshing to watch the support grow and to know that so many have been touched by this disease and are willing to so generosly donate their time and money to such an important cause.

Hi Carolyn:  I love that title, 'Paint the Town Pink!' I would definitely say that was a successful fundraiser, for SURE!  I have to ask, what is a Zonta Club?

Hi Fred:  Thank you!  I hope we raise double what we did last year!  Did you click?!  It's FREE!

Good post Debe. I have known several women who have died from breast cancer. I do what I can to support locally. Thanks for the reminder. You do have to admit, it is kinda funny to see the big burley NFL players wearing pink gloves and shoes though ☺☺☺

Helping you live your American dream...

Hi Debe,

The Zonta Club is actually Zonta International.  It is an international organization that works to advance the status of women worldwide through service and advocacy.  We do things locally as well.  Here is a link to tell you more:  http://www.zonta.org  I looked up North Carolina and your state is in District 11.  Basically, we are a group of women that meets twice a month and we have guest speakers that talk to us about promoting the health and welfare  of women.  We raise money for scholarships, various organizations locally and try to make people more aware of the injustices that occur to women in other countries and sometimes in ours.  It's a good group.  I enjoy being a member.
