I was just advised that 20/20....TOMORROW...is featuring a storyline on REAL ESTATE concerning....THE PROS AND CONS OF REAL ESTATE...with a segment...do you need an agent?

I hope tomorrows television journalism segment is not reflective of the piece that was presented on 60 MINUTES about a month ago.

UPDATE>>>>JUST ANOUNCED ON TV....10;18PM[EST]...."THE TRICKS OF THE REAL ESTATE TRADE"

Sounds like a show worth watching! I just saw a trailer for it.  So there will be more FSBO's to be Realtor bait for new agents!  And maybe some verterans.

Looks like a topic for a lot of discussion next week.  It should be good.

Maybe someone needs to ask the journalists presenting this segment if they are really necessary these days, since we have all these bloggers now and multi-media "man on the street" videos available online. (And I used to BE a journalist, btw.)

I understand your frustration.

Did everyone see the spoof of the 60 minutes show - 16 minutes?

My wish for these programs would be for them to interview the builders for whom I earn their income.

Then they could interview the subcontractors that build the homes for my builders as well as the developers and their families and subcontractors who build the roads and infrastructure (whom don't work if I don't sell).

Then they could look at the increases in the tax assessments in my county each year due to complet4ed homes and lots I put on the market and sell.  These sales bring government jobs and tax dollars for schools that are improved due to the tax bases that are increased each year.

I also wish they would interview my staff to which I feel a responsibility and client/customers whom I have represented their families for year who depend on me to help them make that next real estate investment.

But, this of course, is not  a story that anyone wants to see - the one with the happy ending and no controversy and people who care (not people who take advantage of other people).  Where would this fit into any type of media?

I think the real estate industry has taken some big punches this year.  I personally, think that NAR's realtor(r) campaign has not addressed the concerns and perceptions of the public.  I also think the new shows have not reported both side of the story.  I think our dues are going up to fund the NAR communications effort and I hope they do a better job than they have in the past -- no one really believes the NAR ads (code of ethics???)/

anytime I see the word "tricks" in a segment like that, I know it is not a good thing. 20/20 is most likely wanting to ride 60 minutes coat tails and get some great blogging publicity. Stuff like this is just to get ratings. Who would tune into a show on "Why to use a Real Estate Agent". Today's society only likes the dirt of a story. Case in point, you don't see too many stories on the good our soldiers are doing for the people in Iraq, like building the infrastructure back, etc. What you hear about are the body counts and bomb blasts. We live off the bad part of life, when we should be celebrating the good...maybe this is a good example of where our society is heading.

Joan ~ I agree with you. I know that NAR is batting for us, but I would like to see 20/20  or 60 minutes interview NAR! What image does the public get if NAR is the biggest professional organization and is never seen by anybody but the agents/brokers? Is that a good message either? I think if NAR could get on one of those shows it would be great. But we wouldn't be able to give them MEAT like they want or maybe even the 'gloom and doom' they public wants to hear sometimes. I will be sure to watch, thanks!

Media is man bites dog. A story about a good real estate agent would hardly be what they are after. They like negatives, get folks riled up. I spent 30 years in media, so I am not just ranting.

It's all about being negative. Media tends to put a negative spin on just about everything. Apparently, the truth does not pay the bills.

The total commissions earned in residential real estate in the US is in the range of over 70 Billion dollars, why do think so many want a piece of it.  Any wonder that these,  DATVS ( you figure out what that stands for -the first word is Dumb and the last word is shows ) feel they have an ear and can try to divide and conquer us like the other industries they go after. Real Estate gives them way to little income but housing as an industry gives them a lot of news.  "Follow the money" is their motto. Anyone ever try to figure out the $$ they get using our free air time that is owned by all the citizens of this country as a national asset. They get it free. You will never see anything about that on TV. The fact that they produce it does not make it so.

Update us when the show airs, I am traveling and would really like to know the story.  The assault on our industry has to be taken head-on and our own PR work has to be done by all of us to not bash but answer with logical timely information.  We know that the TV sensationalism is not going to represent the average seller or buyer.  They will use some issue that is a one time thing and make it the focal point to garner support for their view.  Nice post.
