5 Green Steps To Try This Month!

Reblogger Emer S

Here are some good green tips...the only thing I'd add/modify is with #2, instead of just sleep, turn it off and unplug it (even when an appliance is "off", if it's still plugged in it could be using energy...not good for the environment or your energy bill).

1.  Turn off your faucet.  An open faucet lets about 5 gallons of water flow every 2 minutes!

2.  Put your computer monitor to sleep.  Screen savers, those funky moving images you get when your monitor is kept on, cost you an extra $50 or more in electricity per year!

3.  THink about your TP and buy recycled toilet paper.  If every household in the U.S. joined you, it would save nearly 1 million trees!

4.  Baby your lotion and powder.  Choose phthalate-free products for your kids (and yourself) so no one is exposed to the harmful chemicals.  Look for it on the label.

5.  Don't sit idle.  Turn your car off if it's going to be sitting for more than 30 seconds so you don't waste gas.

Great tips. The hardest tip for me personally is to not let the car idle especially during extreme weather.

OK, what the heck is "phthalate" ????

I saw a show that tested some of the "green ideas" and the one that says unplug everyting saved so little that it just wasnt worth it. I think it was less than a dollar a year you would save but HOURs of your time you waste. (turning off I agree with ... un plugging, a different story!

I saw a segment on the news last night discussing the energy and money that can be saved from unplugging.

I can't find the piece I saw online but found a link to a similar one: http://sustainablog.org/2008/10/24/ward-off-energy-sucking-vampires-just-in-time-for-halloween/

I'm not totally sure myself for much of a difference unplugging makes, but if I find a more solid answer either way I'll post it.

Here you go:

Wiki says: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phthalate

Phthalates, or phthalate esters, are esters of phthalic acid and are mainly used as plasticizers (substances added to plastics to increase their flexibility, transparency, durability, and longevity). They are primarily used to soften polyvinyl chloride. Phthalates are being phased out of many products in the United States and European Union over health concerns.

and here's the link to the online dic def:

Hope you have a good weekend too :)
