The new Maine smoke / fire and carbon monoxide (co2) law and further clarification of what it means to John Q Citizen of "Vacationland".

As a follow up to yesterday's blog that spells out the dry but pertinent details and sub chapters of the new Maine smoke/fire/carbon monoxide detector law, more clarification from local lawyers, Maine electricians we talked to and this from the press release from the Maine state fire marshal's office

Am lucky to be involved in a Houlton Maine house sale now with a listing owned by my seller who is an electrician who line by line scanned the new code. Made the calls to suppliers for their take, and then used his house as a test guinea pig. We determined he needs smoke detectors in the 3 bedrooms, and he had a hard wired / battery back up hall smoke detector but it may need to be changed to a photo electric type depending on whether it is 20 feet from the 2nd floor bath or not. Carbon monoxide units on order to comply but calls made to Houlton Maine code enforcement, follow up call by the electrician / owner who was on the phone again today to the Maine state fire marshal's office.

Read it over for yourself, open letter style that we had a local attorney scan and provide us for help in spreading the word.

It makes me think of folks you see in Maine just starting to cut up their fire wood. Not the ones who are working on next year's wood to heat their homes but the last minute chop it down, saw it up and split it this weekend types. Those are the this winter's homes with chimney fires that local fire fighters will be at at 2am with the wind howling, low low temperatures causing the stoves/furnaces to work over time. The places with structure fires, chimney blazes from burning green, wet creosoted, not properly dried wood.

Someone in an apartment or a home that dies in a fire shocks, rocks the entire community who feel a personal loss because we know each other in small Maine towns. Understanding new gargon and regulations is always subject to interpretation of the legalese for each specific instance. We spell out the law bit by bit in the earlier blog to avoid any glossing over, misunderstandings or misinformation.

Hi, Andy. When I lived in Maine and Vermont and was using a woodstove, we ALWAYS had smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and made sure they were in good working order. You are exactly right about the green wood/creosote buildup! I'm glad to see this legislation to protect the uninformed and inexperienced!
