The Cliffs at Point Loma, San Diego, California

When I was in San Diego in August, I went to Point Loma, one of my favorite places in the city. It is the home of the old Point Loma Lighthouse, first used in November, 1855. It was quickly realized however, they had made a bad choice in location - fog and low clouds often obscured the light, and 36 years later, a new lighthouse was built in a more favorable location closer to the water.

There is a section of cliff there, below the old lighthouse, that intrigues me - I love how erosion and wind has created such intricate and interesting patterns in the cliffs.

The old lighthouse sits above the cliffs in this shot, 422 feet above the sea

Debi  - your photos are fantastic.  I love the one look up at the light house, what amazing cliffs.

Debi, good job.  The color one almost looks like coral formations and the B&W looks other wordly.

Hi Kryste, Different spelling for your name, I like it :) And thanks very much, glad you like the photos!

Hi Kevin - I agree, the black and white looks like a moonscape, or something! Thanks for your visit!

Wow, Debi, that is so beautiful! I love how the lighthouse sits on that cliff! The black & white one is very interesting -- I agree it looks like an abandoned planet or something!

These are some fantastic pictures Debi! You know the Old Point Loma Lighthouse closed after only 36 years in service due to the low clouds and fog affecting the beam. The keeper and his family extinguished the light at this light house on March 23, 1891 and moved 100 yards down the hill to the south to the "New Point Loma Lighthouse" ! Such a beautiful place!

Hi Debi:

I'm loving that first photo with the lighthouse.

What a dramtic difference between color and B&W...

Why, Debra! What exactly does that say about you - and me? LOL

Hey Marney - Thank you for stopping by! It's pretty wild looking, I agree!

Hi Stephanie - Yes, I know - and I would love to live in the new one! Isn't it so very cool? And what an amazing spot...

Hey Toula - The difference is very dramatic - it's interesting how much you can change the feel of a photo by switching from color to B&W. I've been playing with that alot lately now that I have better conversion software. I'm planning a post about it soon.  Thanks for your comments!

Debi - You have captured every detail of the finely sculpted cliffs.  I love that kind of photos.  The black and white picture has a really nice nostalgic feel to it.

Deb,

The second rendering looks like the set from an old sci-fi movie. I love it.

Hi Zane - Creepy Cool - I like that! Thanks!

Hi Myrl - thank you - I'm having fun playing around with the B&W conversions - You can create such a different feel to a photo by switching to B&W...

Hi there Rich! Thank you - I was surprised at the effect the B&W had on it - verrrrry different!

Debi, Scenes like that fascinate me too. Almost looks like tree roots. Looks as if the cliff is hanging on for dear life. Trying not to be engulfed by the sea...

I have never been to San Diego and would not have imagined scenery like this.  Both the color and black and white shots show off the patterns in the cliffs so nicely.  I like the view of the lighthouse.

Hi Debou....Lovely formations.  Were you able to get out on them for a close encounter?   Views like these always seem to bring out some adventurous spirit....go figure ;-)  Also love the old buildings at Lost Creek.  I think you are having entirely tooooo much fun (kidding).

Hi Michael -Yes, it does look sort of desperate, doesn't it? It was just a relatively small section of the cliffs that were formed this way. Very interesting...

Thank you Sharon, Some shots need to be in B&W!

Hi Sandy - I never cease to be amazed, or to appreciate, what nature lays before us.

Hi Ann, You will have to go visit one day - it's got a little of everything! Thank you :)

Hi there Craig! Thanks for the visit, and I'm glad you like them. I have to wonder how you'd 'shop' this! Go for it if it so moves you! LOL

Hey there MS LB! Yes, I was able to scamper around a bit, but it's pretty steep, and I didn't want to leave any 'humaness' there, know what I mean? Oh, I'm having a blast these days...plans are to head for Breckenridge this weekend for some snowshoeing! Thanks for checkin' in!

Debi, The Cliffs at Point Loma are so interesting - I don't think I've ever seen anything like them, so I appreciate your photos today!   The Black and White does look like "the Dark Side" although I think both are beautifully creepy, in a way :-)

Debi,

I like them both. The B+W shot looks like a post-volcanic flow or possibly post-hurricane picture. :)

Hi Mary - The cliffs really are interesting, and unique. It's a great spot!

Hi Steve - the volcanic flow idea is  a good one - it does kind of look like a lava flow :)

Debi what a find, a great photo subject.  It is amazing the sites we can find in our world. Erosion seems to be a big problem for lighthouses; I have visited several that had to be moved because of this problem.

Love both photos you sure have a knack for finding the right scenes.

Wow color really does add a new dimension.  Funny how we went from black and white to color and now people are experimenting with black and white, and everything in between now.

You love lighthouses too?  We took a road trip in July up the shores of Lake Huron in Michigan and I got to see lots.  It was so much fun.

Debi, you captured such texture in photo, the cliff erosion reminds me of tree trunks. near the op of the soil. Now this place looks like a fun place to explore!

Hi Jennifer- We can find something to photograph everywhere just about everywhere we look! I hadn't heard about the erosion vs lighthouse problem, but it's plain to see it can be an issue! Thanks, Jennifer.

Jenny - It is amazing isn't it? Everythinng comes back around :) Do you have photos to share of your road trip?

Cynthia - I hadn't thought of that, but you're right!  It was fun :)
