CraigoprahMy pal Craig Schiller will love this one.  It’s a double nod to him!  Not only did he once post about Oprah, recently he also has posted about books.  Thanks Craig, you inspired my post!

OK… so why do I want Oprah to sell Real Estate?  Simple, I need her advice on where I could find interesting books to read regarding my profession.  My friends Karen and Kristal have both sent me books to read.  Ladies I thank you.

For those of you not sure where I’m going with this I can only assume that you’re not aware of the Oprah Book Club.  Oprah is an avid reader and she will often “promote” books to her audience.  I’ve read several of the Oprah recommended books and most were good.

I was thinking that if Oprah was in Real Estate, she could give me a list of books she liked.  Let’s face it, the chances of Oprah leaving her current gig to sell real estate isn’t very likely.

SO…. Maybe I could call on you, fellow rainers, for a list of books that you recommend I read.  So how about it??

I too felt exceptionally blessed to have some new books from KK and KVS on my night stand.  We are lucky girls from Michigan that we have such nice friends on AR, aren't was Sara!  I feel very fortunate.

I also feel like I have been given a gift because my two long lost racers both posted tonight, on a night when I am especially happy to see you both.

You are so very welcome.  Guess you are collecting "K' books this week.

I enjoy reading, sometimes I pick up one of Oprahs books, but mostly not.  I prefer non fiction, books like travel guides.  I've been known to read the "Lonely Planet" or Rick Steves books from cover to cover.

Then of course I own every website, css, design, seo  book known to mankind.

Yes, MF it is nice to see the long lost posters back at The Rain.  May they stay long and blog much. It's been lonely around here without them.

Sara,

I apologize for a blatant self serving answer, but you ask.

I suggest in order:

1. My "Get The Money / A Consumers Guide to a successful Mortgage Application."

2. "How To Make Friends And Influence People"

3. "Think and Grow Rich"

4. Art Fetig’s excellent "Selling Lucky" (available at his web site.)

5. My "One House At A Time / Finding And Buying Single Family Rentals"

6. Optional. My "Flipping For Fun And Profit"

7. What ever the current text books are for your GRI. Get started early on the GRI and then the CRS.

8. If after you get started you decided to get into any thing other than single family, start with the Board (NAR) classes.

9. You can’t go wrong with anything by John T Reed.

Well I’m felling a little foolish, I just looked back to make sure I spelled you name right. I should have looked closer in the first place. You could just organize your blogs and comments, throw out the non-real estate, the feel good stuff, and print a pretty good book yourself.

The advice stands. Stop watching Oprah and start reading, better yet start teaching! I taught one night a week for five years, I read the required text I already knew the material but it makes you sharpen your arguments and wits.

Keep Blogging,

Bill

Sara, I just blogged about Seth Godin's book "All Marketers Are Liars". His other books are worth reading, too.

Hey Sara,

Although I like reading about real estate, I also find that books outside of real estate can help with my business, too.  Here are some of the ones that I think have helped me most (in no particular order):

  1. The Millionaire Real Estate Agent by Gary Keller (good for systems and business planning)
  2. The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell (helps you to think outside of the box)
  3. The Power of Intention by Wayne Dyer (a little "out there" at times, but makes you think)
  4. How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie (also a fan; really good for customer service I think)
  5. Never Check Email in the Morning by Julie Morgenstern (I have to be organized.  What can I say?)
  6. Book Yourself Solid by Michael Port (I love his "Red Velvet Rope Policy.")
Maybe that gives you a start.  It doesn't have Oprah's Book Club seal of approval, but hey.  I'll make my own seal.  How about that?

If Oprah sold real estate, she will do a great job. Now if she sold real estate before becoming so popular, whe will have to learn like everyone else, through trial and error. A gift to gab does not mean a gift to sell.

Sara, congratulations on taking over the #2 spot in Michigan!

Unfortunately, I find that I rarely have the patience or time to read any book from beginning to end so I tend to only read the parts that are of interest to me.  Obviously, I don't read fiction or novels for that reason.  Although I do buy books regularly, in recent years, I've done a lot of reading online and learned a great deal on the Internet... news sites, blogs, experts with websites that have their articles, etc.

Sara,

I always enjoy reading your blogs.  Congrats on the new A/R ranking position in Michigan.  Not a big fan of Oprah, but I liked your blog, very entertaining.

Check out my new realtors first blog and welcome him.  I invited him to Active Rain and he didn't touch it until today.  Check out his blog: http://activerain.com/blogsview/Fantastic-Real-Estate-Mortgage-Experience-in-Trumbull-CT-?13932

Real estate is complex, at least from the point of view that we run a business.  I will recommend The Millionair real estate agent by Gary Keller and Joe Williams.  Also it helps my business when I read books about marketing and about blogging.
