It's SAFE to DRINK The WATER (again!) -- Metro Portland Mini-Crisis

By

"Water, water EVERY . . . and NOT a drop to drink!"

You wouldn't think about Metro Portland, Oregon as being a "dry" area.  Afterall, the average rainfall is 37.5 inches/year.

But just this weekend we had a 72-hour BAN ON DRINKING WATER!

Stores were selling a week's worth of bottled water in 30 minutes!

Thankfully, the BOILED WATER NOTICE has been CANCELED!!  (And it was issued the day AFTER Thanksgiving!)

Even though the BOIL WATER ORDER was in affect for 72-hours, the City of Portland felt it necessary to place it.

Why?

Because random testing of the City's water supply found E-Coli in the water reservoir.  Although the "Boil Water Order" was "tangent" (short amount of time) it was issued due to E-Coli bacteria being found in a relatively small part of the drinking water system.

Local government officials tested for: E-Coli 015787, which is the organism -- the strain -- which is the MOST serious E-Coli form.  This "strain" was NOT found . . . but the water system was tested for this just the same.

No occurrence of illness has been reported.

Now that the "boil water notice" has been lifted, be sure to run tap water for two minutes . . . make sure the water is ice cold when runs from the tap, before using it.

And this goes for your pets too!  Make sure they have fresh, clean water.

Remember the Boy Scouts' Motto?

~ Be prepared ~

This is a REMINDER to ALL OF US that a 72-hour Emergency kit is NECESSARY ~~ because you never know when anything will hit.

For many regions around the Nation, the weather will become icy, snowy, cold . . . PLAN for it BEFORE you have to!

EW YUCK!  Hopefully it was found and resolved before anyone may have gotten sick (and good points about being prepared for emergencies such as this!)

Hi Carla!  As a former nurse, I KNOW how devastating e-coli is and glad the city acted quickly on this and kept anyone from getting ill from it.  Great localism post!

Have a wonderful week...

Hey Debe -- it was pretty surreal, and the safety measures are GREAT to have had this come up in a random test of the water supply.  Feel better, hopefully your mending!

Carla - This is precisely why I ALWAYS add 3 parts bourbon to one part of water whenever I drink water and keep a case of scotch for 72 hour emergencies.  Not sure why but water always makes me feel happy...

Carla,

There is an important message her for EVERYONE!!!!  I am going to feature this in Cosmic Cow Pie and create my list right now... to BE PREPARED....  When you think about it...If someone wanted to really shake up America... it would be by messing with the water supply!

Hi Nevin -- funny!  We know were your neighbors will be when 2012 hits!

Hey Carra . . . it is interesting to look back over this weekend's mini-crisis.  Not all of Portland was affected, but a good portion of homes were without water.  Thanks for the feature!
