Interviewing agents to join our team, Real Estate is not for everyone

By

With the Real Estate market beginning to pick up , I have decided to interview agents to add to our team of 15.  After conducting only a few interviews I am amazed at how many people come in to the interview thinking this is a part time job, flexible schedule and want to work from home for the most part.

I guess I have been fortunate in that my team all work hard  every day to make their living.  Looking around my office now i see 9 agents pounding away out their computer and putting in time. 3 are out showing property and only a few are not here.  I feel it is important to come into the office for the "team" but also for production.  It is too easy to get sidetracked at home and to put your business last.

So why is it that many believe Realtors jobs to be easy street?  Even potential Realtors believe they can golf all morning, go to lunch , take a nap and then work an hour or two?  I know I am higher then most brokers in my expectations in agents, but come on people, nothing in life comes for free.

I would love to hear others opinions and thoughts on this.

I agree, this is not a part time job.  If you are the kind of person that just sits around waiting for a sale to occur, you're not the kind of person I want on my team.  For some people that's ok, and it is a part time job, but for our team we are looking for full time people, passionate about real estate.  I operate more on the management side of things, so if you are going to take time out of my day with questions or issue, you need to be productive.

We're fairly new, and still building a team (we're commercial agents), but most of the people we have are not just agents, but people that have either invested, or dealt with commercial real estate in the past, and now would like to get into the purchase, sale and lease side of it.  (so if anyone out there is that kind of person, we would love to hear from you).

Lori,

As a Broker, the way the agents in your office work sounds like a dream.  We still have so many part-timers in our industry that don't have a clue as to how to run an effective business.  It sounds like your staff is lucky to have you as their Broker with the expectations you have and the example you provide.

Have a great year!

Hi Lori - I

believe that people associate with "like minds". You are clearly a highly driven business person with a great work ethic. With that example, agents who have the same drive and work ethic will be automatically draw to you. And those who don't - won't. But in the big scheme of things...that's probably OK with you! :-)  Sometimes slow growth is much better than hiring the wrong people and investing valuable time with people who are just not a right fit for your organization and draw your resources.

Good Luck and Best Wishes for an Amazing 2010!

Lori,  As a member of your great Team... I have to say that I am lucky you took a chance on me.  I was the one who wanted to play golf, go to lunch, work from home, etc.  After a year with you ... my tune has changed.  ( I feel a blog coming on... )  I am working harder and playing less-- and have seen the results-- today I took photos at the Guest Day, instead of playing in it.  Because I had an offer coming in and a showing and an Open House to go to.... Thanks for taking a chance on a part-timer-- You made me want to be better and work harder!  Kathy
