Wallpaper: Remove it for a faster sale!

It's a tough decision to make.  Beautiful wallpaper professionally hung and in perfect condition.  We often face this dilemma as we review options with our clients.  It is expensive to remove wallpaper and often painful for the home-seller...I would say however that it is almost always the correct decision.

This kitchen was in a beautiful condo that we staged in Cincinnati.  Along with furnishing selected rooms in this condo we also recommended broadening the appeal of the property by removing wallpaper and painting over faux finishes.  It was a tough decision for the homeowner to make but after months on the market, a quick sale and a happy buyer again proved the power of staging!

Design To Market is located in Cincinnati and has been staging homes in Cincinnati since 2004.  For more information visit our website at www.designtomarketllc.com or call Jo Potvin at 513-265-0952

In 1996 we stayed at a B&B in Waltham MA, and it had the most unusual wallpaper I've ever seen:  the pattern was not flowers, stripes, polka dots ... it looked like panelling!   Hope I never come across that again!

I think you did a wonderful job in this kitchen; but then again, after perusing your website, I see that is par for the course!

How fabulous!  I just love the change when the wallpaper comes down!

Jo - With the vast amount of different patterns (and even textures), wallpaper ends up being very specific to the homeowner.  Unless the wallpaper compliments the room entirely, it's best to have it removed or painted over when preparing your home for the market.  It IS a difficult decision but... in my opinion, always a good one.  Thanks for posting.

And... Congratulations, Jo.  Your post is being featured within the group.

Thanks for making such a good point!  It's difficult sometimes for a homeowner to understand that what they may love is not going to appeal to their target buyer.

Also, some wall paper is easier to take down than others (depends how it was put up)....I believe it's best left to the professionals so the walls don't get too mucked up to paint.  And NEVER paint over wallpaper!  :)

Yep Jo get rid of that stuff!  Often it can be painted over, which is much easier than removing.

WOW, what a difference!  Great job, it looks completely different.  I painted over some wall paper in a home once and they received two offers that week after being on the market over 90 days!  Way to go Jo!
