I haven't heard of the stimulus money getting spread around so was surprised to hear the City of Austin actually received $7.5 million to improve the energy efficiency of the City municipal buildings and facilities.
Austin Energy will work with other City departments including Austin Water Utility, Police, Fire and Parks and Recreation to get improvements completed. The work is expected to generate 100 green jobs and should save more than 5 million kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity annually.
Improvements will include installation of more efficient lighting in various City facilities, parking lots and garages and increasing insulation, sealing ducts and other energy improvements at a number of Austin Fire Department and Parks facilities, to name a few.
The Municipal Energy Efficiency program that began in the late 1980's will now be assisted. Since that time the program has reduced peak demand by 11 megawatts and saved more than 46 million kilowatt hours of electricity, enough to power more than 3,000 homes year round! Think what they can accomplish now the 7.5 million!
