Don't Go Near the Water! Escaping the Snow Now Facing a Tsunami

Watching the news this morning of the terrible earthquake to hit Chile my thoughts went out to all those affected by that tragedy.  Then as the news progressed to the impending tsunami that will hit the islands in the Pacific including most certainly Hawaii, I realized that our good friends from Baltimore who had fled the snow for a week of sun in tropical Honolulu were going to be witnessing a historic tsunami event.  We had just gotten confirmation that they had arrived in Hawaii last night after enduring flight delays and cancellations to reach their paradise only to be greeted by sirens wailing at 6 am warning them to evaculate.  Sheesh, what a vacation, Hopefully they will be safe and have some great stories and pictures to bring back.

Isn't it amazing that we have the ability to tell people so far ahead of time that this is coming.

Thank heavens we do.  In researching the 1960 tsunami that hit Hawaii, the people were warned, evacuated, then after the first few small waves came back to look at damage and then were hit by  the large waves that approached 20 ft.  Being in daylight hopefully people will stay away and be safe. Our friends are on the 5th floor but they have been told to evacuate.

Mike,

My thoughts are with those that have been hit by the earthquake and those being evacuated as a result of the tsunami warnings.   Let's hope that your good friends and everyone impacted gets to return home safe and sound.

thanks for the comment Gerry, we just talked to our friends, they are fine, but the forgot to move their rent car, hopefully they bought the insurance!  They report that everyone is coping well, but at the local Costco store there was a run on Spam!  Seems Hawaiians love Spam, they were limiting purchases to one case per customer.  That's one case to many for me.
