As many of you know, I am a big fan of gardening. I find much peace in growing a variety of plants, fruits, vegetables, trees and native plants too.
I just had the greatest chance encounter today and I wanted to share it with you.
I bought a Hydrofarm Jump Start Grow System Kit in 2008 to start getting ahead of the game -- that is, with my finicky spring warm ups and freezes here in Grass Valley.
Well, I wasnt all that scientific about it at the time, but I was able to do admirably with a number of mellon and cantaloupe varieties during the 2009 growing season and this year -- during the offseason . . .winter! . . . I was determined to hatch a better strategy for really maximizing my growing time in 2010.
Well to get the number of plants started that I needed, (I already had the heat mats and the seedling trays) I had to buy a 2nd Jump Start System.
I contacted Hydrofarm in Petaluma, CA in order to find my local sources for this product.
They gave me five names. Three in Grass Valley, one in Penn Valley and one in Yuba City.
I started calling on the Grass Valley options. No answer on the first company. the 2nd company said I needed to come down to put a 50% deposit down and then it would be 7-10 days and the 3rd said they woudl take my information and get back to me in a few days to let me know what the lead time would be
I was a little bummed. I was excited about my head start plan and I now I realized that I may have jumped the gun and planted too early -- the seeds were already in the trays . . .and as soon as they germinate they would be needing light to continue on . . . oh my! what to do, what to do?!
I called the Penn Valley option and Shela answered, "hello Anything Green, how may I help you" . . . She was a breath of fresh air. After, more or less, annoying other resellers with my request, she was genuinely happy to hear from me. I told her what I needed and she replied, "no problem, I am putting an order in with Hyrdofarm today and can have this ready for pickup tomorrow". . . I was momentarily speechless.
I thanked her and said I would wait for her call that it arrived.
Well, needless to say, it came in and was the new T5 design, with a higher intensity single bulb configuration -- same price too! While I waited to be checked out I took an opportunity to walk around their showroom and I was very impressed with the amount of items that are in stock for the home gardener. Top to bottom, they have it. Soil testing kits, to liquid fertilizer.
Shela and her husband Doug are not only genuinely friendly, but they deeply care about the products they sell and support they give. I know it sounds cliche', but I felt like family by the time I left their place. They have a great operation and they are a great asset to our foothill push for 'locally grown'
