One of my most important parenting, client and colleague management techniques came from a parenting book called "The First Three Years of Life" by Dr. Burton White. His suggestion for dealing with a demanding two year old is to say "You are very, very important but you are not more important than anyone else. I will get you your cookie/blankie/feedback/contract when I finish what I am doing". In 15 years of using variations of this line only once has a client screamed back "But I am more important". Even my 13 year old daughter knows better (although she certainly has perfected the eye roll and head toss)!
