I wanted to blog about a fairly un-popular subject: snakes. The Indiana Jones fans probably know his infamous quote: "Snakes, Why Does It Have To Be Snakes!!" Most homeowners in Arizona aren't fans. We like them even less when they're rattlesnakes. Truth is, most of us don't see them very often here if ever. I saw my first snake at a luxury property I was showing two years ago (see picture below). Needless to say, the buyers didn't purchase the home. I also had one in my yard last week - ugh!
Many of the choice lots in places like Ahwatukee, Scottsdale, Tucson and Phoenix back to preserve or golf course. Nobody likes to talk about it (especially realtors), but if you don't care for wildlife, location and type of lot can be something to consider. More critters usually come with properties that back to preserve or open land. It's inconsistent and there are no guarantees that you will or won't see wildlife you don't care for.
- A couple of tips to keep snakes out. They're not good climbers, but they slither.
- Block gaps underneath gates and fences.
- Make sure they don't have a food source.
- Clear excess debris from your yard and around your home.
- You can also try Snake-A-Way - a granular repellent you can purchase at home improvement stores.
If you do see snakes, don't mess with them. I've noticed that even our garter snakes here don't look like the ones I grew up with in the Midwest. So if you're not an expert - leave them be! There's a number to call for the herpetological society and they'll come get them as well:
If you're looking at purchasing a home, ask the homeowner or neighbors if they've seen snakes. All in all, it's a personal choice for each home buyer!
