Vernon Hills and Buffalo Grove - Summer Construction

We've all heard the saying "there are two seasons in Chicago: snow and construction".  Vernon Hills has the same reputation.   Well, we have finally put away the parkas but the construction cones have come out.  It seems like every main road (and a good portion of the side streets) in Buffalo Grove, Vernon Hills and Long Grove have the unmistakable long traffic lines and short tempers that only construction in the Chicago Northwest Suburbs can bring.

Luckily, there are a number of resources one can turn to in order to find updates on local construction projects.  Unfortunately, it may take you all morning to find an update on the construction relevant to the route you take for your kid's soccer practice.  I've tried to narrow down the major construction projects in Buffalo Grove, Vernon Hills and Long Grove here for you.  I've also included links to the official construction websites for those towns and villages.

Just remember everyone, we're all in this together.  Allow yourself some extra time to get to your destination, show your fellow drivers some common courtesy and give the construction workers ample space to do their jobs.  And just remember, it could be worse.  I heard that it actually snowed in Wisconsin this weekend.

Vernon Hills Construction
The Road Rehabilitaion project for 2010 will take place on Aspen Drive and all cul-de-sacs on the west side and on on Evergreen Drive from Route 45 to Haddon Circle.

  • 4/26 to 5/14 - NCT Street ( the access road to Dominick's & Mobil station from the mall).  Enter the strip mall from either Rt. 60 or behind the Babies R Us.
  • 5/1 to 7/6 - Evergreen Drive & Apollo Court, Aqua Court & Abbey Lane off of Aspen Drive
  • 7/6 to 8/4 - Aspen Drive fron the Sullivan Center to Sullivan Drive

This project effects travel to/around Hawthorne Mall, Hawthorne Club Subdivision and Deerpath Subdivision.  Click here for more information from the Vernon Hills official Road Construction Website

Lincolnshire Construction
While technically not in Buffalo Grove, Vernon Hills or Long Grove, this project effects just about everyone traveling between those suburbs.

  • 8/2009 to 7/2010 - Intersection of IL 22 and Milwaukee Ave.  Intersection reconstruction, culvert and traffic signal replacement.  Just an awful spot for construction.  Unfortunately, the best advice I can give on this one is just be patient and try to avoid the intersection during rush hour at all cost.

Long Grove Construction
No major construction plans at this time.  Keep your eyes open though.  As construction gets further along on the Sunset Foods at the intersection of Hwy 83 and Aptakisic, I'm sure we'll see some traffic back-ups due to construction equipment.

Buffalo Grove Construction

And of course, for those of us living near the area, the mother of all construction projects this past year - repaving Arlington Heights Road between Lake-Cook Road and Rt 83.  While I haven't seen any of the mind-numbing back-ups that were all too familiar last fall, I would still recommend detouring this area for the next 6 weeks until the project is finished.  Try taking Rt. 83 to Buffalo Grove Rd. to travel south to Lake-Cook Rd.
