Okay for most of you, the header makes no sense at all, but for a few, (the Dutch few), you will know exactly dutch fanswhat I am talking about.

If you are a soccer fan, you will know by know that the Soccer Team from Holland just make it to the finals of the World Cup in soccer being played in South Africa.

Most of the time I am not much for promoting my birth heritage, but when your native country gets to the finals in the worlds most popular game, it is something very special and reason enough to feel a little Dutch Linda In HollandPride for a few days, until the final game.....

We just love the way this tournament is almost an extension to the Winter Olympics and how the fans and events that are happening along side of the tournament is as entertaining and exciting as the games them selves.

We are proud Canadians and Linda was born and raised in Port Coquitlam in BC. and I became a Canadian Citizen at the earliest possible opportunity in 1989 after the mandatory 3 year trial period.  To see the Canadian Pride grow to the proportions it showed everywhere during the 2010 Olympics and just recently during the 2010 Canada Events in and around Victoria, was awesome.

The World Cup is another event where so many things can go wrong, but I think it is a wonderful credit to the organizers and the fans from every country to see the entire event taking place with enthusiasm, great spirit, but without major incidents, very cool.

No matter who wins the Cup, (although I hope Holland will win it finally) the real winners are the people and Nation of South Africa, who would have thought that this was possible 20 years ago.

My mum's Dutch. In 1974 we were in Holland when Holland played in the finals against West Germany. I was 8 at the time. I was so distraught at the outcome that my Opa had to take me for a walk in the park after the game. There was a whole bunch of Opas and dads walking around the park holding the hands of distraught little boys that day. Opa never lost an opportunity to remind me of that day.

He's long gone now, but I'm hoping that Germany beats Spain tomorrow so that Holland can beat them in the finals. I will be thinking of Opa on Sunday, that's for sure.

HI Malcolm,

Thank you for sharing your wonderful story.

I remember both times that Holland was in the finals and yes on both losses there were a lot of people that were seriously distraught for many days, in our family (at that time living in Holland,) everything went from orange to regular in hours, and we all tried to forget it all as soon as possible.

I recall being actually sick for a couple of days after the loss against Argentina, and for years felt that it had been a consiracy to ensure that the host countries were to win the cup (both Germany and Argentina won at home)

Thanks again, and yes a repeat against Germany would be cool, but to be honest, I think they stand a better chance against Spain......

The German team seems to play like the Dutch team but on steroids (faster, better, more determined), not actually on drugs off course ;o)

Good for you.

One of my business partners is Dutch, so I'm cheering for Holland too.

Ireland never made the tournament and of course neither did Canada.

Hi Brian,

thank you for commenting,

one day Canadian soccer will get there, slowly we are growing a solid core from which the next wave of cruyff's, Maradona's and Pele's will come from.
