ActiveRain Beach Etiquette

ActiveRain beach etiquette ......

Thou shalt not put links in others comments - this is one of the biggies as far as I'm concerned.  A 'newbie' challenged me on this the other day saying that they have a "members only" account so theActiverain links are 'not going anywhere'.   Hmmmm.

Not the point dude (ahh, a clue).  You do not take away a looker, a browser, a buyer, a seller off of someone else's post to your own site.

You can ask the authors permission to include a link to your post that is pertinent to the topic in the comments.

No exceptions here unless you are very familiar with the author (like married).

Better yet, right your own post as a 'spin off' and give credit to the original post with a love link.

Example:   I was reading Gary Wortal's fabulous post on 'kicking sand in your face' which made me think of .......... and off you go on your own topic.

That's how it's done.  It's being considerate.  It's being a good little boy or girl with all the other great kids in the giant sand box called 'Active Rain'.

Complaints or sand in your pants?

Thank you for bringing this point up. I do however find that most Activerainer's are very respectful of this and I rarely have an issue. This is a good reminder though!

Well said Lyn! A good question for the newbie would be then why would you attach the link in the first place if it will not go anywhere? Thanks for the post.

Matt

With new members constantly coming into the Rain, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and send a quick email the first time. After that, delete.

As someone that just started back in May, I know what not to do. Not that I would do anything like that. It is a platform of comments for cris sakes.

That is a hard one.  If someone has written about the same subject I am usually secure enough that my post is not going to be robbed of it's traffic by a link, that I don't care.  If the comment is a true comment, conversational and the link flows in that conversation, it is OK on my posts.  I do see though that by allowing it people who can not make the distinction between conversation and networking (linking) will push the envelope more.

Are people using logos in their comments much anymore?  Big brouhaha over that in late 2006, early 2007 most got over the need to put a personal logo in comments but one member who has made my skin crawl since he joined (2007?) seemed to still be doing it long after most got over branding their comments.  I would delete his pompous comments with his logo the next day.  I will have to go see if he is still doing it.

Matt Bartlett:  All links 'go somewhere'.  So he was incorrect.  You don't need to add another one because your name & signature is the link back to you and your blog.

Maureen:  Some people are still doing it but I don't see the need now with the picture, etc.

Claudette:  Pointed out another excellent example. Do not manipulate others comment string to 'hijack' the conversation on the post.  Example:  Someone comments, you reply comment 5 times in a row & it's not even your post!

I'm all for great posts and frank discussions, good arguments and opposing points of view. But I have read some posts where the original poster used the 'delete' button for censorship of views and comments that they didn't agree with or for being proven wrong. That is not right. Lets use the delete button responsibly.

And newbies will be newbies, it's part of the learning process and how far they push the line. Isn't that what our kids do from time to time?

Anyways, thank you for the reminders.

If someone puts a link in their comment because it will enhance the conversation or whatever, can't the link be inserted so it opens in a new window and not take anybody away from the original post?

Jackie:  Yes you can.  So be sure that you do 'link to open in new window'.

I'm not bothered by a link to a post someone else may have written on the same topic. It's a way to get more opinions on a subject. I don't think we can have too much information.

I'm new here to Active Rain and so appreicate all the advice that I can lay my hands on with regards to how to do this.  I then followed your link "sand in your pants" because well, I just had to see where that led.  Then I got into reading that post and getting excited about the manual and looked at that and then ran back here before I forgot to leave a thank you.  Phew...I think I just lost a pound or two and I never left my sofa!!

Hi Lyn,

This is a good post for newbies to read as sometimes they are not aware of the etiquette here on ActiveRain.

By the way love the picture!

Watching a post where someone just added 5 links in his comment...

No "do you mind if.... " or "may I?"

Interesting links.  He should write a post!  Watching to see what the blogger does.  If anyone says anything..

I agree with the exception of when you may have a link that is pertinent to the topic at hand...but in that instance, the link should ALWAYS open in a new page rather than hijack the original bloggers post.
