Trinity, FL-Timber Greens - We have a mating pair of Pileated Woodpeckers every year. It is very difficult to get pictures of them because they usually don't come close to our home but if you look really carefully, you will see the two of them looking for bugs on the tree. Mainly you can see their red cockades. They raise their young in a hole in a tree. I have also seen their two offspring who look almost identical to them at this point.

The Pileated is the largest woodpecker and usually is about 16-20". They make rectangular shaped holes in dead trees (large rectangular holes). A pair will stay together in their own territory so I guess that means that the woods behind our house is their territory. They eat carpenter ants, wood-boring beetle larvae, fruit and seeds. The species declined in the first half of the 20th century; but has rebounded and is increasing.
These guys are fun to watch and they make the classic Woody Woodpecker noises. They just don't like their picture taken (at least, by me). I will keep trying to get a better one.
