After The Storm - Both Sunshine - And Shade

Nags Head Storm Damage I wrapped up my time on the beach in Nags Head, NC this afternoon.  Yes, the jellyfish were still out in full force, but I decided to enter the water one last time anyway.

I'm happy to report, I did not get stung, but I do believe I felt the 'swish' of one of the jellies on my leg.  Ewwwwwww......

As always, Real Estate, crowded my thoughts.  Look carefully at the photo to the left.  The last house on the right has been my shelter this week.  I either sat in front, to the right or underneath it because it offered the shade that this blonde-haired, blue-eyed, fair-skinned kid needed.  I'm happy to report that I may have several new freckles, but no sunburn to speak of.

I've been seeing so much in the headlines about Flood insurance lately.  In my area, flood insurance is just a nuisance.  The last time Salem County had a flood was in 1999.  "Hurricane Floyd" came to town, filled some of our streets in Pennsville, but the folks who were deeply affected could not collect on their flood insurance policies.  They were not happy.

The photo above shows a whole strip of homes in Nags Head that were storm-ravaged in November, 2009.  Just a short eight months ago these homes were lit-up, perhaps full of tenants or homeowners who were enjoying the oceanfront view.  Now they sit empty, steps ripped off, septic systems exposed, doors hanging open, etc.

While I was appreciative for the shade, my thanks did not go without a pang of sadness for the property owners.  I hope they will be made whole.  I wish them godspeed in getting over this stressful episode of their lives.

That looks like it would have been fun just to hang out, read a book, and take a break from real estate!   Hope you enjoyed yourself, AND did not get a sunburn.

What a relaxing vacation! I'd like to have some too...if I do get the time. I/m sorry for the houses though... There were alot of houses affected by storms and many who have had a hard time recovering and rebuilding their homes.

Glad you had a great time Chris even though the homeowners have not. We can't even imagine what it might be like to live through something like that.  All the best to all of them.

Chris, the funny thing is the Hurricanes get all the press here and the Nor'easters do much more damage since we get them more often. No news on those usually. I've been a resident here in Dare County most of my life and I love our lifestyle and beaches. I hope Nags Head gets beach nourishment together before more homeowners are no longer that.

As Ilona said above, the hurricanes do get the attention, but it is the Nor'easters that do the damage!  As OBX vacation home owners, spring is usually worse for us than the fall.  So glad to see you were vacationing in one of my favorite places.

Our disclosures out here include information about flooding, even if your house is 4,600 feet up in the mountains. LOL
