Consolidating Schools in Rohnert Park - A New Beginning And A New Name

With the economy in the tank, we have had to endure school closures to consolidate resources and save money. With the start of the school year on August 26th, two middle schools are being combined into one. Students who would have attended Mountain Shadows Middle School will be attending a school with a different name and mascot. And so will the students whose school didn't close.

In order to be fair to all kids involved, the district re-named the school that will remain open. With this change, ALL middle school students will be attending a school with a NEW name and a NEW mascot.

Creekside Middle School has become Lawrence E. Jones Middle School, named after a school resource police officer. Mr. Jones served for 27 years with the Rohnert Park Police Force while mentoring a generation of children. Always smiling, Jones earned the moniker "Officer Friendly".

Goodbye Mountain Shadows. Goodbye Creekside. Hello Lawrence E. Jones Middle School.

Very nice tribute Cynthia.  Very well put together. I totally agree on the name change.  Several years ago, a new high school was built to replace 2 schools, but he new school retained the name of one of the 2 schools.

When school finally opened and the 2 schools merged, they were instant rivals.  The students from the other school never felt at home a the new school that retained the old name. Even teachers from the closed school didn't feel welcome.

Barbara - I didn't put the video together, it is on our school web site and on youtube as well. I'm actually trying to find out who put it together so I can give him credit. There are 4 videos of him altogether on youtube. Mr. Jones was an icon in our schools and is sorely missed.

Charita - the name change was costly and was not favored among many in our community. But the school board was very wise in knowing that kids at this age (13-14) would have a hard time if one of the names were kept. It will be interesting to see how it plays out ... and the choice of the name was brilliant.
