Charlie Chan ... a new book coming out ... from Ocean City, New Jersey
You have to be "real" old to say that you know who Charlie Chan is, or was. I remember the old black and white television in our living room ... a very large unit with a much smaller screen. We probably picked up three channels if we were lucky. And, of course, having grown up to about 7th or 8th grade via radio, tv was a new thing for me and my family. And staying up late and watching "the million dollar movie" or the early horror films plus some good ones as well. And along came "Charlie Chan," the Chinese detective always played by either Japanese actors, or a Korean actor before Warner Oland (Swedish) became the main man. His #1 son was usually along with Charlie doing "the thinking part" of the crime-solving.
Well, Yuntel Huang has written Charlie Chan telling every reader all they want to know about the fictional Chinese detective. From a recent book review in Time magazine, the author himself has quite a background coming from the 1989 Tiananmen Square demonstrations to Alabama to teaching college English in California.
So here is the conclusion of the book review from TIME: "Charlie Chan is that rarest of treats: a work of exhaustively researched popular history that reads like a dime-store romance." I'm requesting that the Ocean City Public Library order it so that I, and a lot of other readers, can learn more about the great man. dap
