Lucky on Broadway

By
Industry Observer with ARFCO Media

I'm at Broadway East and Mercer Street on Capitol Hill. Sitting at the red light my eye catches a man walking his dog down the Ave. They cross the street in front of me and it's immediately obvious this dog is having an absolutely wonderful time.

On leash, well behaved, its youthful energy can hardly contain itself as it dances around master and wants to greet everyone on the street with wagging tail joy. Myself, I'm in a brain drain. A busy day, I gave it my all, and 40 minutes left in my commute before I make it home and cross the finish line.

This scene captures my undivided attention. I'm moved. I feel like a boy and I'm suddenly laughing with joy. The shift is catalyst to an array of cascading thoughts and memories when I notice the dog has only 3 legs.

My mental images immediately track to memories of several stories and movies and I, for a second, feel a little guilty wondering, "Is your name Lucky?"

My thought pendulum swings back. What a wonderful experience witnessing a dog who is obviously loved and enjoying an awesome day in the world. It cared not if it had 3 or 4 legs.

Alrighty then... Note to self: It is a good day.

Rene, It is hard to see in the picture does the dog just have 3 legs.  Our neighbors dog has a missing paw and she is the sweetest dog ever.  Life is what you make of it; whether you are man or dog.

Hi Marchel... Yes, 3 legs... I wish my mind sometimes was a digital camera that could share slides! I watched this event unfold before me but only had a random couple of seconds to capture anything. And, yes we are what we make of it for sure! Thanks for the comment.

Rene...

Life is what you make it. A great lesson from a "lucky" dog!

What is luck? Is it more than perception? If you are loved and happy few things can defeat you.

Excellent post as always!

I love watching puppies especially bounce as they walk with their owners. You can just see the thought process. "I'm on a walk, I'm on a walk, I'm on a walk... Oh my owner loves me, oh, I"m on a walk" As they bounce and dance with every little step.

Todd: Me too... There's no unabashed demonstration of the pure joy in life than a young dog out for a walk!

Rene, I love your story!  Dogs don't seem to have the same conversations with themselves about this kind of stuff as humans do!  The old tail just keeps on wagging!

Pat: Thanks... They don't do they, but they sure talk to people with their eyes and wagging tails...

What a gr8 pic - as the old saying goes - "when life give you lemons make lemonade."

It is up to us to make our day a good or bad day - sure things and people can alter our routine but it starts with a positive attitude.

p.s after a long day I always look forward to taking a walk with our dog! She does bring a smile to  my family
