I am not a Venus Flytrap: A promise to Montreal West Island home buyers and sellers.

By
Real Estate Sales Representative with Immeubles Deakin Realty

Venus FlytrapI am not a Venus Flytrap.  This is my promise to you, Montreal West Island home buyers and sellers.

I know you feel compelled to wipe out your caller ID when you call me.  I know you weigh the pros and cons of giving me your address with the gravity of considering whether to have another child.  I know you don't want to give me your last name.  And some of you don't even want to give me your real first name :)

I know this because you called me this weekend asking about my listings and about other homes for sale in Montreal West Island.

You feel it necessary to approach me in a way that will make it impossible for me to grab you in my clutches, never to let go of you again. You want to avoid an unending, and unrequested, barrage of e-mails from me, phone calls, calendars, magnets, letters of ANNOUNCEMENT!!!, UPDATES YOU MUST READ NOW!!!, and all of the other endless ways some of us in this crazy business of real estate (and other businesses too) trap you and never let you go.

But you should know this: I am not a Venus Flytrap, and I never will be.  I promise.

I will not harass you.

I will not devour you.

I will not add you to an endless, automated, meaningless, e-mail drip campaign.  I will not call you with feigned excitement in my voice announcing, "The market has NEVER been better!!  You've GOTTA jump in right now!!  RIGHT NOW!!!"

If you have questions for me about Montreal West Island homes for sale or the real estate market in general, you can be comfortable firing away. My contact with you will be meaningful and respectful of you, your time and your privacy.

I may be from Venus, but I'm not a Venus Flytrap.  I promise.

Tanya - You gave me a smile today.  Good for you.  I always think of my Dad as a Venus Flytrap, because he will sit, and wait for someone to come along. "...would you get me a..."  when he could easily get up and get it himself.  But he just sits and waits, patiently.

a lot of agents do "devour" the poor buyers that call in.... no wonder they don't want to give us their real info... i don't know how many times i have gotten leads that have an email like johndoe@anywhere.com.. i prefer to work with clients that want my help and not force them into it..

Great post Tanya... It did make me smile as i get the same calls and sometimes forget the reasons why people do the things they do. it is nice te see another agent state what they do not practice. yours though was the best written i have seen.

Tanya - this is so well-put, I'm jealous:-)  I hope the Venus Fly-trap agents everywhere heed the gentle whispers, and just maybe re-evaluate a bit the industry they are in and what it should mean to the consumers.  You, my dear friend, would have had no reason to distance yourself from such perceptions if the roles of helpful advisor superseded those of a sales person in oh so many training manuals, sales meetings, and such.:-)  Kudos for this gem and kudos for being you.

Tanya,

This is a very good humour post on the subject. Your personality comes through the writing in a charming way. The infamous caller id block has always been a point of contention with me. I do not understand what has happen to mutual respect. I remind people that I'm not an information bureau.

Tanya, your post reminded me of my aunt who used to say she was Mrs Cook when talking to Realtors ;). an alias of course.

Sally, happy to have made you smile.  And how lucky for you to still have your dad around, flytrap and all : )

Sheila Newton Team, very well put: "i prefer to work with clients that want my help and not force them into it.."

Why thank you, Scott!  Like many, I find it easier sometimes to talk about what I don't like versus what I do like.

Ah Inna, what would I do without you!  I am thankful for your reassurance that doing what feels right to me is the right thing to do...'cause anything else I try on just feels icky : )

Sergio, ah yes, "mutual respect," with the word mutual being key.  What do you suppose came first: the chicken or the egg?

Janice, a.k.a. niece of Mrs. Cook, that reminds of when I was in university and used to work in a bar. Depending on who was asking, my name was "Roxanne" at times LOL.

I know the feeling.  Asking for people's contact info is like asking for their social security and bank account numbers.  However, I really dont blame people.  I never give my address or phone number out if I possibly can.  It is tough to communicate openly this day and age with the amount of spam out there.

Excellent post. The "trick" to it all is to inspire people to WANT to give you their contact information, to WANT to hear from you again. And you don't do that with tricks or traps!

Tanya, a great analogy and a good way to blog about how you are! I'd never assume you to snap like a Venus trap.

Jane, I really don't blame people either.  But it's sad that we've gotten to the point where spam is so ubiquitous, our fear of it blocks meaningful interaction.

Gordon, I'm always happy to have Martians visit my blog : )

Jennifer, absolutely.  I'm working on that with one of my callers, but there are a lot of layers to get through and a lot of mistrust that's been built up from previous encounters with real estate agents (not me!).

Ellen, I can snap sometimes too - just ask my husband : )

Same here Tanya and I really couldn't have said it better.  There are Realtors who are like a venus fly trap, but they are not us.  Great post!

I'm getting a lot of push back at open houses.  People do NOT want to give out their information.  I have to say that I don't blame them at all.  A lot of agents around here have signed up for "Obnoxious lead generating made simple."  The rest of us are left trying to figure out how to reach people without driving them crazy.

John, I think we all have.

Larry, thanks for much for your kind words and for stopping by.

Ruthmarie, "...how to reach people without driving them crazy."  That is the magic elixir we all need to be looking for.
