Don't let your marketing be boring!

Susan has a lot of great ideas in her blog here if you're having problems being creative with your marketing. If boring marketing brings you any clients at all, they probably will be boring clients!

Every six months or so I get a postcard from a fellow Realtor who does a little (very little) marketing in the neighborhood where I live.  I'd like to call her and ask if she actually gets any calls from those cards.

The cards she uses are on a very lightweight cream or pale yellow colored "cardstock" that is about the weight and feel of construction paper, and there is a generic message in a boring black font that talks about her experience and asks for people to call her for more information -- no art or photo

They look flimsy, cheap, and like very little thought was put into them.  Boring!! I doubt if I would have even read them if I weren't in the business. I asked a neighbor what she thought and she couldn't remember ever getting one of them.  She said that she probably would have simply thrown it out if it looked like what I described.

I realize that going to an artist to have something designed can be expensive, but how much money are you saving if you get no business from a marketing plan?  Wouldn't it be better to spend just a little bit more and get some action?

Last year Russel Ray sponsored a Nature and Marketing Contest on Active Rain, challenging us to come up with photos that we took ourselves and would be good to use in marketing.  The photos could have no people in them - just nature like animals, plants or landscape, and they could have captions.

I jumped into this one with both feet, taking photos of my cats, a goat in a nearby farm, and some flowers on my patio, adding captions with picnik.com.  while I wasn't a top winner in the contest, my entries did get a lot of votes from AR readers, which encouraged me to use them on marketing postcards.  Thank you Russel for the contest that got me started with them!

The message on the reverse side could be almost anything: and I have sent cards about several issues.  They could be used for messages about buying instead of renting, daylight savings time, special buying or financing programs, offers for free CMAs, or whatever I want.  And the artist is cheap - it's all me!

The photos here are the ones I came up with.  What do you think?
And by the way -- these are mine; you need to take your own photos.
