Twenty (20) Years in the Business Does Not a Mentor Make

WHO KNOWS?  THEY COULD HAVE BEEN DOING THINGS BADLY FOR 20 YEARS.

Charita recalls the veteran agent who brags about their years in the real estate Lennbusiness.  While I believe that experience is critical to good real estate practices, it is the totality of the experience that makes for good and effective representation.

How much money they make isn't indicative of good representation either.  I recall an agent who presented an offer on one of my listings for a buyer who was marginally qualified.  The buyers were rejected by their first lender, then a second lender.  After discussions, the sellers rejected their offer.

However, throughout this entire adventure, the buyer's agent continued to brag about how much money he made.  "I make $100,000 a year, I know what I'm doing."

Best to evaluate each agent and transaction one at a time.  How long an agent has been in business or how much money they make isn't the measure of quality.

Twenty (20) Years in the Business Does Not a Mentor Make (30DC25)

Every now and then we run across the real estate agent that boast "I've been doing this for 20 years" as if to say, look here Rookie I stopped learning years ago so there is nothing you can tell me about this business.  There's an heir in their tone that is really saying "just sit back and take notes and watch my smoke."

When someone makes an unwarranted point of pointing out their longevity in the business it always makes me wonder if they feel that they'll garner instant respect.  Is an auto pilot announcement really warranted or should their actions be reflective of your unspoken claim?

I have never had a mentor (directly) but I've taken notes in the background.  I've watched performers with positive energy, a master plan, good habits that consistently reap results, and I've adopted some of the best practices of these producers.

I don't make the claim that I've never had a mentor as some sort of statement that I'm "all of that" even without having had a one on one mentor relationship.  Not having a mentor may have been my saving grace in that now my knowledge base is broader than any one person could have ever provided.   And as I have only been in the business for 5 years, I am still a mentee being educated by mentors that are available at my beck and call. I'm not pigeoned holed into being paired with a single person, affiliated with a single company.

I can learn whenever I feel like it.  I can pick and choose the best practices for me and my business from multiple sources .

We're in a business that is constantly changing and selecting a mentor requires evaluating that person and listening for cues that will let you know if they are changing with the times or stuck in a time warp.   Is the mentor open to new ideas and willing to incorporate some of the old school lessons with the new school.  Does the mentor seem like the type that will allow you to bring something to the table by way of knowledge and/or youth if that's the case.

I have not mentored anyone and may not be in a position to do so at this moment.  But what I will always bring to the table is an open mind and a mind that is willing to absorb new things like a sponge or surround myself with people who will or are willing to do likewise.  Even if I don't agree or initially grasp a concept, does not mean I'm not willing to go out on a limb and give it a try.  I do believe that there are no rewards without some risk.

My name is Charita Cadenhead and I've been a real estate agent for 5 years.  Although I am a broker/owner, I don't know everything there is to know and the funny thing is that I don't know of anyone who does.

If you are seeking a mentor, I know where you can find one or many:  www.ActiveRain.com

I would not discard the agents, brokers, REALTORS listing, marketing, selling properties for over five years yet. And anyone that says they don't need a mentor, have it all figured out...well, watch out for the humbling two by four heading to the back of your head. You need it for perspective and to lose the Jack Horner complex with the fruit loaded thumb you wave. We learn from, help each other. We need all levels of experience in the real estate industry and no one gets taken out behind the barn and shot for having 20, 30 or more years under their belt. That person is a valuable resource, not a real estate dinosaur needing to be in a mls property nursing home.

Lenn - Some of the worst realtors I know have been in the business forever, but I would let them sell an outhouse.

My limited experience (at least from this side of the table) has been that the most experienced realtors have been, without question, the worst source of information, advice, etc. And they tend to be the Brokers-in-Charge, running offices! Amazing.

Real estate is a continous learning process.  If you aren't learning all aspects of the business and staying current then the number of years in the business won't mean much to a client needing assistance.  And how much you make has NO relevance what so ever to what you kow.

Susia.  I've known some brokers who were very poor sources too.  Not all are thankfully.

Larry.  Hey!  I know that guy.

Roger.  Bingo.

Andrew.  Good point.  The experienced agent should have a lot to offer.  Just let someone try to take ma out behind the barn.

This business chanages daily and the big dog three years ago may not be the best choice today.  You have to stay engaged and educated.  Thank you for grabbing this blog and putting it back out there for those of us who missed it.

Richie.  I LOVE IT.  I remember when the Internet was in it's infancy and I belonged to a listserve about real estate (pre-blog days).

There were a few on the list who were always trying to "one-up" another or most.  King of the Mountain was a daily game for some.

Blogs are much more friendly in nature (usually).

Kim.  My pleasure.  I often re-blog interesting posts when I want to "spread the word".

You are right, of course, the agent who was "top dog" 20 years ago, just may be stuck with 20 year old skills and knowledge.

Hey Lenn - Thanks for re-blogging.  My opinion on "experience" is this...If you are doing things essentially the same way you have done them for 20 years, then really you don't have 20 YEARS of experience.  You have one year of experience, repeated 19 times.  To have true EXPERIENCE, you have to be learning, changing, growing all the time.  If you do that, your income will likely reflect it.  Then you know you've done something.  Your clients know it too.

Good post.

Charita.  HA!  I try to practice pithy in reBlogs.  Only reBlogs.

Ilona. Indeed.  I know agents who practice real estate the way they did 20 years ago and they are dangerous.
