Questions to Ask a Mover

If you are moving, you may decide to use a professional moving company.  What are some of the questions you may want to ask the mover?

  • Is the moving fee based on an hourly rate, a fixed fee or on some other calculation basis?
  • How many moving personnel will be included in the rate or fee?
  • What is included in the fixed fee?
  • Do the movers include packing materials and/or other items?
  • What is the experience of the movers
  • Can the movers provide any references?
  • Do the movers provide insurance to protect your possesions during the move?
  • What is the cost of the insurance?
  • What does the insurance cover?
  • Should you also obtain insurance from your own insurance company?
  • Are you protected (indemnified) against liability resulting from the move?
  • How will the movers wrap and protect your furniture and other valuables?
  • Will the movers pack your possessions into boxes or will you be responsible for the packing?

These are only a few of the many questions that you should ask your potential mover.

Hi Marc,

Good stuff, I like this. Is this from your own personal experience in moving?

Yes all good points.......do you provide as discount to previous customers? Do you provide used boxes for free to customers?  How about used wrapping materials? :-)

You have provided some good questions!  I would also ask about their claims process and check references.

Hi Marc,

All very good questions, but you forgot the most important one:

Can I get all that in writing?

Marc -- these are excellent questions to ask any moving company.  All bids should be in writing, and a clause added that there will be no upcharges allowed after the truck has left the pick up address.  Some moving companies are notorious for quoting a price and then later claiming that other "fees" applied -- and refuse to unload on the delivery end until those "fees" are paid.
