Back in the old days, I was much "Greener" than I am in today's busy lifestyle. It's nice to be reminded of ways to better our home environment without leeching poison into the sewer drain. Thanks to Paul for reminding me to use those extra lemons from my tree!

Lemons

Tip of the Week: Fixing a stinky garbage disposal. Remember the lemonade powder to fix a smelly dishwasher? Well what about the garbage disposal, you ask? Here's a trick to try: Quarter up a few lemons, squeeze the juice into your ice-water, tea, onto your fish, or whatever, then throw the quarters, peels and all, into the disposal. Run cold water and grind away. The smell is great and, again, the citric acid kills smells and maybe even a few germs.

If things are really bad, pour about a half cup of baking soda into the drain and add one cup or so of vinegar. Put the stopper(s) in all sink drain openings and give it a few minutes. Expect to hear some fizzing and popping. When the time is up, pour some boiling water down the drain to rinse. Then do the lemon thing to freshen the smells. What about grease, you say?! Grind up some ice and baking soda while running water. The soda helps the grease congeal, the ice solidifies and scours. You can also go in the opposite direction and run hot water and dish detergent directly in the disposal while running. Just be sure to rinse ‘till all soap is gone.

Kathy,

I always use lemons regardless.  I love the smell of the lemon oi, also limes, oranges, all citrus.
