Speechless Sunday: Saint Mary Queen of Poland

Last week, I was previewing homes in Silver Spring in Forest Glen.  And I came across a beautiful church that looked like it had stood in some a little village in rural France for a few centuries.  There were no signs or indications of what demonitation it might be, although there was a Knights of Columbus Hall just across the street - a hint that it was Catholic.

When I got home, I googled the address and learned that it was indeed a Catholic church - a Polish Catholic Church.  There are Masses in English, Polish and Latin.  I couldn't figure out when it was built, and the web site was all in Polish except for the part about "Polish Language Classes", which was in English.

Oh!  And Lech Walesa visited the church when he visited Washington in 2005.

St Mary's parish was founded sometime in the early 1980's, but the church looks a whole lot older than 30 years!  Maybe I'll find someone who can read Polish to look over their web site with me!

William and Joan, OK, here is the real church!  It was all Comcast's fault!  My home Internet was totally goofy for about 24-hours.

It must have been a St. Mary's weekend.  I posted about St. Mary of Sorrows in Fairfax Station :-)

No way this is 30 years old!!  Somebody else must have owned it before--I don't think 30 years ago anybody here still remembered how to build real stone walls.  Did you check the public record?

By the way, is it my pre-Halloween mindset, or does it look a little as if the building had a face, complete with the somewhat unusual witch's-hat-style roof?  (Or is that also Comcasts's fault?!)

Pat,

I have to marvel at the stonework and imagine how it must have been built. :)

Yay, Pat--I think I got it!  The "Old Church," or officially called "Historic St John's" at Forest Glen was built in 1893/94!  Makes more sense, doesn't it?

Can't help it... it's kinda cool...there's a site about the Founding Chaplain, Father Rosensteel, that has a picture of the church from 1910:

Cati, thank you so much for the link! That answers a bunch of questions. It's clearly a really old church, and the old house is still there, too.
