Watch out for that park bench!

By
Real Estate Agent with Jameson Sotheby's International Realty

This was the sight I was met with, when returning to the office this afternoon.

A patron, of our local coffee shop, had carefully tied her pooch up to the park bench located directly outside of the shop.

Unknown to her, this was not one of the city's park benches, designed for strength and durability, rather it was a faux bench, purchased by the coffee shop and placed outside their storefront, for the sitting and sipping pleasure of their patrons.

Infortunately, said park bench was, as many things are today, made of a lightweight, formable plastic.  The bench looked kinda real... was the right colour... had wood grain imbedded in the plastic.  But where it counts...

Little sir doggie caught sight of something that made him want to chase... It could have been another dog, a squirrel, a little butterfly... who knows.  Sir Doggie made the mad dash across the street, with plastic park bench in tow.  He barely missed getting hit by traffic, and the bench when it became wedged at the curb across the street, quickly allowed his leash to slide off.

His owner went running down the street after little Sir Doggie (as I've since named him)... I hope she finds him.

This story made my heart lurch....I have a beagle and the slightest scent will send her baying and trying to find the source.  Occasionally she gets loose and I fret until she comes home.  (Thank goodness I live in the country!)

Home is where the hearth is.

Kim - I hope so, too.

Richard - it sure is...

Cynthia - I like the sound of that ... "The Tenth Annual Alan May Doofus Awards".

Ken - Watch out for that park bench!!

Alex - should oughta be pretty identifiable... (no... that's not the one, it was a GREEN park bench).

Kathryn - Beagles are trackers... and a scent will set them off.  But she might not have been able to pull this park bench.

Alan,

As many know I have greyhounds so with them being sight hounds if they see it they want it.   Their idea of a mad dash puts an Olympic sprinter to shame.  I am always extremely careful.  I know if they get away and make a dash it is no use to try and catch them.   Only hope they either get tired or that they listen and come back.

Larry - I think at some point in each of our lives, we've all had an incident where we've run after a Greyhound®.

Alan if I had witnessed that first hand I believe someone would have to have picked me up off of the floor.  Too funny.

Charita - there's not much that'll wake you up faster, than watching a dog sprint across the street in front of you, followed by a park bench.

Cutely-written story, Alan. Hopefully the owner found her wayward pup.

On a side note, you have mentioned in the past that you can whip out one of these posts in 15-minutes or so. (I’m still in awe.) But how long does it take you to Photoshop the perfect illustrative image? ;)

I hope he was found, but your graphic would look great on a phone pole "Missing Dog Bench"

Bill - that graphic was pretty simple... I found two pieces of clip-art (from my clipart subscriptio service at clipart.com) in a minute... a "dog running" and a "park bench"... I popped them both into Photoshop, positioned them and drew the leash... took all of two minutes.

Karen - that'd be a funny flyer.

That must have been a hysterical site, Alan.  But I do hope poor old Sir Doggie is alive and well and back with his owner.

I've never understood people taking their pets to these kinds of places in the first place. If even one person claims they got bitten, you won't be able to imagine the liability for you and your family.

Todd - I'm not sure what kind of "place" you're talking about.  She went to the local coffee shop, and tied her dog outside for a few moments.

Not a real person

Reminds me of the Will & Grace episode where Demi Moore walks into a packed coffee shop and asks who tied their dog to the park bench outside. “Well, whoever you are, you don’t deserve a dog, so I let it go.” A guy gets up and runs outside, leaving an empty table where Demi can now sit.

Alan - I just saw this one and started cracking up.  Earlier tonight, I thought instead of locking the fur babies upstairs during the whole trick or treating chaos (we have sooo many kids and the doorbell rings constantly for hours) that I would tie them up to the coffee table and the end tables (we have three fur babies).

After the first sound of the doorbell, my Joie (60lb springer spaniel) took off with one of the end tables (I thought they were heavier).  Needless to say, I didn't think that one out thoroughly.

Alan - OY VEY!!!  It was funny!  Thank goodness there was nothing breakable on the end table (just some papers and a file I was working on).  I truly thought the table was heavier because it is solid wood with a heavy wood top and there was a basket on the shelf (under the top) that was full of magazines (heavy).  Guess he is a strong little bugger.  Needless to say, I switched him to the other side of the coffee table from Dawson (90lb Golden Retriever) and moved my little Sadie (20lb Corgi) to the end table.
